Rising Stars: Meet LaKesha James of Manhattan

Today we’d like to introduce you to LaKesha James.

LaKesha James

Hi LaKesha, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello, My name is Lakesha James. My passion is healthy skin and people being their best selves. My skin journey started in 2008 while serving in the United States Army. I was diagnosed with psoriasis after an allergy to immunizations that were required to deploy to Korea.  This led to a dominoe effect of other skin related issues and diagnosis.  Attempting to overcome these challenges and the empathy i developed for the people I met  who shared the same maladies and desire for an ever evasive solution led to me becoming an esthetician and makeup artist.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Some of the obstacles and challenges I face are the constant changes with my health and life happening. Handling obstacles as they come has worked out a lot better for me because I am a planner, but you can only plan so much. Life will keep you on your toes, which in my experience has been the best opportunity for growth. You have experiences and get through them in the best way. Then you can help someone else either avoid having to go through the same experience or help them get through the0 experience better than you did. It always works out in the end. I have my faith and a fantastic support system filled with my husband, kids, family, and friends!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am now a licensed esthetician and makeup artist! I am so excited to start my career professionally. I will be going to get my laser technician certification, and I will also be participating in the Athleisure Collection Show in KCMO as a makeup artist in October. I look forward to working at a med spa soon.

What I am most proud of is that I have overcome so much and am becoming everything I have dreamed of. I am proud that my husband, kids, family, and friends are healthy, growing, and thriving. All of the tragedies and what could have been setbacks have been a massive part of who I have become, so I am grateful, and it has all been worth it. I can care for others, especially with skin, because of the constant journey that I am on.

Besides that fact, what sets me apart is that I grew up in a Military family; I am a retired Army vet, working mom, and wife with three kids. I can relate and adapt to many different circumstances and environments. I have an authentic love for people and achieving their goals.

Do you have any advice for those just starting?
Keep the faith and never give up! There is always light at the end of the tunnel! Keep a realistic but positive mindset. You’ll get more done that way!
