Rising Stars: Meet Dalesa Blockmon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dalesa Blockmon.

Hi Dalesa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m a 26 years old celebrity makeup artist. I’ve been a makeup artist for the past 8 Years! though most will think that my dream at first was to be a Makeup Artist it wasn’t. My Dream was Dance. That was my life before makeup. I spent 16 Years of my life dancing. I had dreams on pursuing it and opening up my own dance studio and give back to my community, but GOD had other plans for me. Makeup was just something I started to do on myself to learn an everyday face. I never intended on being a makeup artist or ever thought about it being my career. Growing up, I never knew how to draw or anything, but one day my mom wanted me to do makeup on my sister for a photoshoot and I posted it online just to show people. Not thinking people would want me to do theirs. So since I received so much support, I started doing my research and really learning how to do makeup. I learned all the basics from watching YouTube makeup tutorials. Everything else was all trial and error. Eventually, I learned everything I needed to know about makeup before I took any clients.

Within seven months, I got the opportunity to do my first celebrity, which was grammy-winning 90s r&b group SWV. Months later, I received another call to do Award-winning rapper Cardi B. every since then, my career just changed. I had makeup on rapper Dreezy, Kash Doll, Erica Mena, Cyn Santana, Rah Ali, Ari Fletcher, Mehgan James, Amina Buddafly, Lyrica Anderson, Alexis Skyy, Jess Hilarious. I started to really have a love and passion for this and really started to find ways to perfect my craft and brand. By that time, My work was featured on The Wendy Williams Show, MTV’s Wild N Out, BET Awards and Better KC. I was 19-20 years old at the time working full time as a server at Cheddars Scratch Kitchen and sales associate at Kohls. My life just shifted so fast I decided to chase my dreams and quit both jobs with absolutely no plan or money saved, just faith. Shortly after, I got an email to for NYX cosmetics in LA. I traveled back in forth there for months, then started to stay 2-3 months at a time. It really opened up more doors for me. I then became A mommy to a beautiful little girl named Braelyn A year ago. All while still being a full-time Mother, Entrepreneur and businesswoman, I still balance my life to still continue to keep building my brand and reaching my goals to be and go further in life.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Building a Brand is never easy. You have times when you’re discouraged and just feel down or even comparing yourself to others. Being a mom is a Full-Time Job. My daughter comes to work with me every single day! It was a great but u expect drastic change to my life, but the best. It’s hard sometimes trying to juggle work, then home to make sure I’m giving her the proper care and teaching her development skills. Then having to wake up early for work, but I get it done with no complaints. Eventually, I got the hang of it and it was easier to adapt.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a Celebrity Makeup Artist.

How do you define success?
Success to me is achieving every goal you set and manifest for yourself through every obstacle and challenge. Never giving up no matter how hard it gets.
