Meet Basi Affia of Sensiil Studios

Today we’d like to introduce you to Basi Affia

Hi Basi, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I fell in love with storytelling in preschool after reading The Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carl. Throughout grade school, I was blessed with teachers, parents, and other adults who encouraged and nurtured my writing and creativity. Hours-long trips out of town with my father would be filled with me writing and reading my stories to my family in the car. As I became an adult, I wanted to see more stories about my culture from my culture. So I founded Sensiil Studios to be the change I wanted to see.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Money makes the world go around, so that has by far been the biggest challenge. But aside from that, I really try to make sure I balance my life and keep my priorities straight with God first, then family, then business. It’s easy for me with ADHD to get hyper-focused on my craft and neglect everything else- sometimes I even forget to eat when I’m working! But none of it is worth doing without God or my family, so it’s challenging sometimes to remember that and get reoriented.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Sensiil Studios?
Sensiil Studios is the midwest’s premier black comic book and animation company. It’s the first of its kind in Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota and travels around the midwest to bring black comic books to various events like Comic Cons, Juneteenth events and more. It was founded in 2022 and since then we’ve partnered with the 11/11 Veteran project which is owned by pro racecar driver Colin Garret, we’re talking to execs at Lion Forge Entertainment, and have worked with professionals from Marvel and others across the world to bring our stories to life. You can find us in March at Planet Comicon KC at the KC convention center!

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I think I continue to learn is to humble myself and be teachable. I may not know how to do something but I can figure it out, ask someone or hire someone to get it done.
