Today we’d like to introduce you to Karla Gil.
Hi Karla, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello, I am Karla Gil, a Venezuelan journalist, and my story begins in Venezuela, where I grew up with a deep passion for communication and a strong desire to inspire others through words. Communicating came naturally to me—I always found it easy to express myself. Television, interestingly enough, kept crossing my path. In fact, my very first interaction with it happened when I was around 9 or 10 years old, when my dear parents saw this gift in me and decided to take me to a TV set (not to mention I begged them to ha, ha, ha!).
Since then, communication has been an essential part of my life. I studied journalism and, after graduating, I moved to Colombia, where I lived for six years. Once again, television found its way back into my life. I had the opportunity to act, which allowed me to reconnect with my communication skills from a different angle. Eventually, I decided to move to the United States to pursue my profession and continue growing.
Not long after, the opportunity to come to Kansas City as a Spanish-language weather anchor for Telemundo presented itself. I accepted without hesitation, because I saw in that offer not just a professional opportunity, but a chance to connect with my community, to live my calling, and to honor my roots. Today, I am the only Spanish-language weather presenter in the city, and that fills me with pride. It is a true honor to represent my country, be a voice for my community, and stand beside those who, like me, have had to start over in a new place.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been an easy road. It’s been a long journey that has required perseverance, courage, and a lot of resilience. As an immigrant—and twice at that—I’ve had to start from scratch on more than one occasion, adapting to new countries, new cultures, and new ways of life. It’s not easy to leave your homeland and your family behind and arrive in a new country without support networks, with a different culture and language as a barrier. So, yes, it has been an enormous challenge, but it’s also been an opportunity to grow, reinvent myself, and show what I’m capable of. Today, I feel deeply proud of every obstacle I’ve overcome. Each stage has brought with it a learning curve that has strengthened me as a professional, as a woman, and as an immigrant. I’m grateful for the path I’ve taken, for believing in myself and my dreams, for everything that has brought me here, and for being able to do what I love, honoring my roots every day.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a journalist and Spanish-language weather anchor for Telemundo Kansas City. I specialize in communicating weather information in a clear, accessible, and relatable way for the Hispanic community, especially in severe weather situations, where being well-informed can make a huge difference.
I am very proud of the professional growth I have achieved and, above all, of the authentic connection I have built with my audience, both through television and on my social media. I enjoy staying close to the community, answering questions, sharing tips, and making weather information useful, understandable, and a part of the daily lives of those who follow me.
What sets me apart is that I am the only Spanish-language weather anchor in Kansas City. That represents a great responsibility and, at the same time, a source of deep pride. Being able to be that familiar voice for so many people who, like me, have emigrated and seek to feel represented, motivates me every day to give my best and continue to pave the way.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
