Today we’d like to introduce you to E’lesa Grimes.
Hi, E’lesa. We’re so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started my business about 2 months after I had my son, who is about to be three. I started it because I didn’t trust anyone to watch my son, but I needed income. I was in a transitional living program at the time. I talked to my cousin about it, and she kept telling me to download TikTok and find something I like or like I’m good at. I started looking stuff up but needed to come up with something quickly. I was on Instagram one day watching someone’s story from out of town and saw they were selling “candy fruit, “so I went on TikTok and looked up “candy fruit, “what I needed to get seemed easy and quick! Everything I needed was cheap. So the next day I went and bought everything and started. I had a good amount of people on social media, but I started off Snapchat first, and my business was booming! I had to make a site because I was getting so many orders! My business has slowed down, but I’m always available to make candy fruit! Soon, I will put my business on the dash for people who can’t travel to me. My site and business Instagram are still up, and I’m still taking orders. I sell candied and chocolate fruits.
It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been relatively smooth?
It has been a challenging road. My struggles were time management, managing the fast money coming in. And transportation. Many people couldn’t or wouldn’t travel because I lived “far away, “But other than that, it’s been a good business. I love making fruit. I can make it with my eyes closed!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m still taking orders now, but I’m not doing it full-time like I used to. I’m going to school right now and trying to work on a new business. I’m known for making candy fruit, though. I’m proud that I could start and run a business. It wasn’t easy, though. My son motivated me. Before I started making candied fruit, I had never seen anyone making them in KC, so it was new to me, and many people shopped with me. I love it when people tell me they never heard of candy fruit or it’s their first time trying it.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting?
Have someone you trust who supports your dreams and doesn’t talk negatively about your business. Something I wish I knew was managing my money, seeing what’s coming in and going out, and seeing a profit! Learn about money!
