Tavia Holt of KCMO, Southwest Blvd on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Tavia Holt and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Tavia, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
What I am being called to do now, that I have been afraid of before is making music and advancing my acting career. I have always wanted to make music ever since I was 5 years old. In high school, my family would always tell me I should go into acting and take theatre classes. So throughout my high school career, I took theatre and music classes and it really opened my eyes to a whole new world.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
The name of my brand is called Dreamy Hair Boutique. My brand makes hair, beauty, hair care, & personal care affordable to many different walks of life. We also sell hair styling tools, hair care products, and unique hair accessories such as wigs, bundles, etc to anyone who has special hair care needs. I started to research and began building my brand back in 2018. Then, two years later, in 2020, I officially launched my business and obtained my LLC which I also accomplished during Covid-19 by the way. God blessed me with the vision and I took the first step with nothing but complete faith. I had no guidance. No mentor. Just God and I walking this journey together. What truly makes my brand unique and special is not only the amazing designs & products but, just the simple fact that I started this business with absolutely nothing but a dream and the determination to turn my life around. You know that saying, “If you look good, you feel good” well we’re a faith based business so when you walk with God and allow him to guide your path the blessings began to overflow and your dreams will be able to inspire and fuel other people’s dreams as well. I had nothing to lose but everything to gain when I started this journey. God blessed me to be able to turn nothing into something beautiful and I am able to bless others by transforming the people in our community into something beautiful as well.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
So I had 2 people from high school that I truly believed saw me clearly before I could see myself. One was my history teacher, Mr. Eric Fox. I’ll never forget him because he was like the easiest class to pass with a ‘A’. I also really appreciated the way he taught because it was never straight out of the book he always kept it real with us instead of making us believe what “they” wanted us to believe. Everyday he would just tell me like at the most random times he’d say “You’re going to be Great!”. And he would just walk away. I would just laugh it off because I didn’t truly understand what he meant until later down the line. My second teacher, Mr. Ammons. One of the best music teachers ever! He truly saw me as well. I remember I had performed at our school’s poetry slam, and as I was walking out of the auditorium and he stopped me dead in my tracks and looked me in the eyes and said “Don’t you ever stop doing what you doing. You hear me?” He said, “You’re gonna be a star one day!” Also, this was way before he found out I could sing too. So when he said that, those words just hit me and never left. I ended up having his class my senior year and joined his women’s choir. It’s funny now because I literally use to dodge him for 3 years, he used to be in the hallways asking everybody “Can you sing?” I was a little shy at the time and my cousins use to tease me about singing so I eventually believed that I couldn’t sing. So I told him no. But one day, I felt like he knew I was lying or at least that’s what it seemed like and he told me to come to his office. So I did. He hit a few notes. Then I would sing them back. We sung a few songs together. Then he stopped and shook his head and said “Wow, you have a beautiful voice it’s a shame you weren’t in my class a lot sooner, but you’re joining my class!” We laughed about it but til this very day I’m so grateful he saw my talent and my power before I did because that’s when the spark started to flame. I hope he’s resting in peace now and he will always be missed but never forgotten! I truly am thankful for them both.

When you were sad or scared as a child, what helped?
As a child what would help me if I were sad or scared is journaling and singing. I would write songs and stories or anything that I was feeling at the time. Writing was a way for me to escape my reality or how to express my thoughts and emotions. When I was a kid, it was very hard for me to express myself so I used my journal or just sing and pretend that the world around me didn’t exist. If I felt like something was missing, I would just write it down and create it.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, the public version of me is the real me. I do like my privacy, however, I don’t portray something I’m not. That’s one of the things I love and value about myself is because I don’t want to be like everybody else or try to fit in I always show up authentically and genuinely as me. I love who I am so I don’t need to hide it or be ashamed for any reason.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What will you regret not doing?
I will really regret not making a solid foundation for my son’s future. I will regret not breaking generational curses and moving my family into a safer & better environment. I will also regret not taking every opportunity or risk to chase my dreams and goals. Lastly, I will regret not creating generational wealth and just making sure my bloodline never has to struggle in the hood again.
