Tamarya Cobb of Grandview Missouri on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Tamarya Cobb shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Tamarya, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What is a normal day like for you right now?
Well for me there’s really never a “normal day”. Everyday for me is rather different, honestly. You know it’s quite funny that this question is being asked because I find myself expressing how people in today’s world would prefer a day to day routine. But, for me I’d rather keep the excitement. Of course you want to keep things organized and remain responsible but, it’s also healthy to let things flow naturally.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello everyone. My name is Tamarya Cobb, and I am a self employed entrepreneur. I work in the beauty industry as a licensed esthetician. I have been self-employed for 5 years, 3 of those years as a lash artist, and the last two years as an esthetician and lash artist, I like to look at my career not only as a business, but a gift from God. I truly believe that making women feel beautiful and allowing them to express themselves without judgement is my purpose.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
Wow this is a great question. Although I have plenty of people in my corner, I’d have to say my sister. I have other siblings as well that I love dearly, yet I call this sibling in particular my twin. Fun fact, we are one year apart and have similar features, so we always get mistaken for twins. My sister has always been my inspiration and role model, so I’ve always followed her footsteps. Growing up our dad would always tell her “you’re the leader and your sister is watching so make the right decisions” and he would tell me “watch and follow your sister”. My sister is also a self-employed entrepreneur in the beauty industry. She works as a licensed braider. Here’s a quick story. Before starting my business I wanted to work at this jumping park called urban air, but soon those hopes would die out because of COVID. During this time I was already practicing lashes on family and friends for fun, so my sister presented the idea to me to start my business. My sister also had her own business at this time. I was totally against it because I seen what came with it. Not only that, I’ve never had a job so I didn’t have any money to start. As time went on we had plenty of talks and I finally gave in. My sister and parents all pitched in to buy everything I needed and from that point my business skyrocketed. From that moment I knew my sister saw something in me that I didn’t at the time. Still to this day I thank my sister for speaking life into me. But hey, isn’t that what big sisters are for?

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
A lot of my viewpoints come from a biblical perspective. So for me, suffering has to come before the success. Suffering has taught me that there is light at the end of the tunnel, and then that is where the success will come in. Success with no suffering creates a lot of room for comfortability. When things are from God you’re more than likely going to be in very uncomfortable positions. That uncomfortability can correlate with suffering, but we have a very intentional God. So when it’s all said and done the suffering will build character and make you a lot more appreciative for the success.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
We live in a world where people think that they’re too smart. As humans, we have to accept the fact that there will always be someone smarter than you. There’s so many different topics and conversations out there that we all may take pride in, but we are never too smart to learn. As a matter of a fact, I’m sure that there is at least one topic that each of us don’t know about in which someone can teach us. So always remember…A wise person listens.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What light inside you have you been dimming?
I truly never realized that I’ve been dimming my internal light until I became an adult. Being a person who takes pride in intellect, morals, confidence, God, and so on will attract people who love it, but it’ll also attract people who hate it. So, unintentionally I would find myself walking on eggshells to prevent the attraction of the ones who hate it. I’m a good person. I truly believe that because I know my heart, so I always wanted to be perceived as such. Well..life isn’t one big fairytale and the hard truth about is to be liked is to be disliked. My mom always told her children “never dim your light” and here I am, now in my adult years realizing I was doing exactly what she told me not to do. As long as you’re being a good person, be unapologetically you. God is satisfied and that is all that matters.
