Liney Blu shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Liney, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: When was the last time you felt true joy?
I recently visited Crater Lake National Park in Oregon, since trail access to the lake is going to be shutting down for the 5 years. The lake is the deepest lake in North America and the 7th deepest lake in the world coming in around 2,000 feet deep. It was formed many years ago by a volcano basically imploding in on itself. There is a ton of folklore around the creation of it with local natives and I can say it was genuinely one of the coolest spots I’ve ever seen in nature. The water is a deep rich blue and crystal clear. I swam in the lake and cliff jumped 30ft into the gorgeous blue water. I can genuinely say that it was the truest joy I’ve felt in a long time. I’ve always loved nature and I draw a ton of inspiration from it for my music. I was extremely grateful to see it and swim in it before it shuts down:)
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi! My name’s Liney Blu and I am an alternative/folk singer songwriter originally from Kansas City. I create music that centers on raw, honest lyricism with rich and thoughtful melodies.
As a queer person from the Midwest, I aim to bring a unique perspective to listeners and inspire them to live fully as themselves. I believe that vulnerability is strength and authenticity is contagious, and I strive to promote these values through my songwriting as well as live by them.
I just released 3 singles over the past few months, “The Explanation,” “If I Were a Cowboy” and “Better Man.” These singles will be part of an upcoming 7 song album called “Scout” that will be released October 24, 2025.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Before anyone told me who I had to be, I was just myself—curious, bold, and unafraid. As a kid, I dressed in boy clothes and never corrected a waitress if she called me “bud,” or asked my mom, “what he will be having?” I was expressive and went along with the flow, fully in the moment. I absolutely loved music and couldn’t help but dance whenever a song caught me. I was bold, brave, and never once doubted myself.
Over the past couple of years, I’ve done a lot of inner child work to break down the walls I built to hide my queerness. Music has become a channel for me to work through that, a way to explore my gender and sexuality with honesty and curiosity. It guides my songwriting and the way I show up in the world.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
You are more than enough and safe to be everything you are.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I’ve always believed in the transformative power of live music. Working both as an artist and in live event production, I’ve seen firsthand how it can touch people’s lives. No matter the size of the crowd, a live performance has the ability to move, inspire, and even change someone. Music lets us see parts of ourselves we might not have realized were there and I believe that it has the power to change the world.
The realities of our world can be trying and disturbing at times. Whenever I catch myself getting caught in the doom, I think of the scene in Titanic where the string quartet keeps playing as the ship sinks. That image has stayed with me in a profound way. I want to be like that—continuing to create and play even amidst the chaos. I am committed to making music for as long as I possibly can, and to helping others share theirs.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people say I made them feel seen—that my music and my honesty gave them permission to feel all the messy, beautiful parts of themselves. That I wasn’t afraid to be vulnerable, and that in doing so, I helped others find their own voice. I hope they remember me as someone who led with heart, created fearlessly, and made space for others to be unapologetically themselves.
