Lee Samson shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Lee, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What battle are you avoiding?
Realizing my own potential, a lot of people talk about the fear of failure but sometimes, not as bad as times past, I struggle with the fear of my dreams actualizing. Like, am I deserving? But I’ve learned that perspective stems from my belief system.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Brandon Williams, I go by Lee Samson. I am an artist, performer, songwriter, vocal producer, & dabble in production/composition. I typically make alternative R&B music, but my influences has grown across the board over the past 6 years of my music career. This makes it interesting because starting out it was a lot of imitation, I remember being compared to one of if not my favorite artist, 6lack, for the longest. My pursuit of more knowledge allowed me to outgrow that but you can still hear shades of him as well as my other influences. It all culminates into what I can proudly say is “my sound” which is cool cause I can typically slip into any genre in some fashion. That only comes from being a student and understanding the science behind each piece you engage with right.
I truly embody that within my music because I don’t like to be placed in a box, I’ve always loved the idea of keeping listeners on their toes. I don’t mind having a “homebase” for my sound, but having variety is cool too sometimes.
As a brand I really push for minimalistic, but expressive freedom. I want people to connect to the stories I tell and feel something, whether it’s inspired, angry, sad, there needs to be some sort of evocation when listening to my records. It has to be meaningful from the simplest song, to the most complex, there is always a reason. When there’s a why, there’s a vision, if there’s a vision there’s hope, hope breathes faith and then in turn action. Which, we all need in this life-time.
After recently taking a break from music, to act in the lead role of “Macbeth” at the Hyve Co-Working space, produced/direct by Keyon Monte, we are back in action preparing to drop singles for the fall while also working on two projects. We also are booking more shows for the upcoming calendar year but for the remainder of the fall I will be truly focusing on the craft and crafting records.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
I’ll skip details and keep this short as possible. During the production of Macbeth, I had my ego challenged by Keyon, the director, I didn’t realize I had a belief about myself that allowed me to lie unintentionally to people I interacted with. In that moment I really felt defeated, even as a believer I felt hopeless. I remember asking him “What’s the point of all this if we all think this way etc… and/or condemned” It was a real gut punch, but he told me “We are here to do our best olive by the design, and that design is our lord and savior Jesus Christ”. We aren’t going to be perfect, we were born imperfect, but learning to accept that and embrace it is beautiful. Cause now we can see clear, I can connect with someone who struggles with a particular thing because I recognize I do too. Even I the face of conflict with someone, that is an opportunity of love because you don’t know what they may be going through and grace is what they need in the moment. It truly pushed me to yearn to serve and love people different, especially through the gift of music the lord blessed me with. Creativity is a powerful force, and I want to create a true safe space for people to understand they are seen and loved, even through wretched ways, there is still hope!
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Never harden your heart
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
I’d say now it is, in the past no. Even now I’m still learning to be unapologetically me, and create certain boundaries. All in all yes.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
No probably not. I’d be selfish and selective with what I did.
