Jordan Kroeger shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Jordan, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
My crazy kids definitely bring me joy. They have wild imaginations and are always teaching me to take life less seriously.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello! I’m Jordan Kroeger, and I’m a comic book artist & author! I make small press indie comics that are all action-focused! I love sci-fi & fantasy, but my favorite thing to draw is crazy action & fight scenes! My book Tiger-Boy Versus (which my kids help me create) is published by Gen Comix, and I color graphic novels for Z2 Comics. I’m also a big D&D nerd and I make art for TTRPG books, as well as commissions for people’s groups!
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
Before I met my wife, I was working a minimum-wage part-time job, I never saw myself having kids, and I did not take good care of myself. Kat was a big part of my getting my life together, encouraging me to look beyond the present and do what I’m good at.
What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
I’m a white male raised in suburbs, so every setback of my easy life has been self-inflicted. Self-doubt, self-hate and self-sabotage have been my enemies for my entire life, and I’ve healed (partially) by talking in therapy, and learning to not care what other people think.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. How do you differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts?
I know I don’t spend enough time online to even know what current fads are happening. Just make what you want to make, and as long as you’re not living under a rock, foundational shifts will make themselves known to you.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I was born to draw and make comics. Nobody has ever told me to do that. It’s just what I do.
