Story & Lesson Highlights with Amber Syer of West Crossroads

Amber Syer shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Amber, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What do you think others are secretly struggling with—but never say?
I think a lot of people are secretly struggling with feeling worthy of rest. They crave care, softness, and time to breathe – but they feel guilty for taking it. That’s why I do what I do: to remind people that taking care of your skin (yourself) is taking care of your soul.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi! I’m Amber Syer, the esthetician behind Bad Cat Beauty – a boutique skincare studio inside Spa Lo.kc.al in Kansas City, focused on intentional, results-driven facial rituals. My work is about more than glowing skin; it’s about slowing down, softening, and reconnecting to yourself. Each service is designed to bring balance – between science and self-care, results and relaxation – so clients leave feeling radiant, restored, and truly seen.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
The part of me that confuses survival with success. I don’t need to stay in fight mode anymore. I can build from peace now.

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
When I stopped pretending I was fine, I started seeing everyone else more clearly. Pretending kept me small, quiet, careful, afraid to disappoint.
But the moment I let my truth breathe, I found strength in softness. What I once called “too sensitive” became my superpower. And now I don’t chase peace – I create it.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The industry says: fix it.
I say: feel it.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. How do you know when you’re out of your depth?
I know I’m out of my depth the moment something falls outside my scope of practice. My job isn’t to diagnose or fix what isn’t mine to treat – it’s to notice, refer, and support. I’ll always guide you toward the right professional, because I’m here to help you, not mislead you.
