Rising Stars: Meet Yamila Williams of Overland Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yamila Williams.

Hi Yamila, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I began my career as an adult nurse practitioner in a primary care serving diverse populations and settings. Over time, I saw that when mental health isn’t addressed, physical health often suffers. That insight led me to pursue additional training at the University of Kansas and earn a Psychiatric–Mental Health Nurse Practitioner certificate.

While working within large organizations, I often felt constrained by policies that limited the quality and personalization of care. I wanted to create a space where clients feel heard, have a voice in their treatment, and can partner in their outcomes. That vision became Stock Health for Mental Balance—because life is about balance.

Can you talk about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Has it been smooth?
Not at all—and that’s okay. Entrepreneurship doesn’t mean you know every in-and-out of business; you learn as you go. I currently work a separate job to keep the doors open, and Stock Health has grown without grants or sponsors. Insurance reimbursements can be delayed or lower than expected, and doing everything yourself—especially without administrative support—can be tough.

There’s also competition. Even with a shortage of mental health providers, many practices offer similar services. Increasing visibility and building trust take time. Still, none of this is impossible; persistence and purpose keep me moving forward.

Let’s switch gears and talk business. What should people know about your work?
I am a board-certified Psychiatric–Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) and a lifelong learner. I’ve practiced in community health, primary care, correctional settings, and—during COVID—in the ICU. Those experiences reinforced how deeply mental and physical health are connected. Today I provide whole-person, compassionate care—“from head to toe.”

I’m known for listening first and meeting people where they are. Clients participate in their treatment plans rather than simply receiving a prescription. What sets me apart is a lens of compassion over profit, authenticity, transparency, and good old-fashioned customer service—treating others with respect.

In addition, many clients want to improve their mental well-being without medications when possible. In response, I am excited and in the process of offering an advanced, non-invasive, drug-free therapy with ExoMind—an advanced approach related to TMS—designed to support cognitive function, mood, and mental wellbeing without the systemic side effects that medications can cause.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
If you’ve had a positive experience, please refer clients who could benefit from care. I welcome collaborations and partnerships with organizations committed to helping people become the best version of themselves.
