Rising Stars: Meet Tristan Gunn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tristan Gunn.

Hi Tristan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Well growing up in Kansas City’s east side neighborhoods we had little no opportunities to succeed. Just a lot of liquor stores surrounding our favorite parks. And in between, there were a few small business owners who I admired and took a lot of advice from. So I always wanted to create and own something, just figuring out what was the obstacle. I always knew music and fashion is my true passion, maybe it’s from how I was raised and my culture. It’s just something that’s in me. One day in college, I believe it was “Into to sports management” a guest speaker told us that our degrees alone didn’t matter and that we should focus on self-branding. “Turn yourself into a brand!” So from that, I hit the drawing board and many ideas, drafts, drawing, and names were created. I wanted to combine my love for music with a fashion brand. I eventually found one that stuck, Trap Stan and Missouri Loves Company Clothing LLC. It’s niched but broad and it can be way bigger than me, the city, and eventually Missouri. I want to reach people all over and spread love and happiness honestly. The names derived from my surroundings growing up; Trap is for bad housing conditions in which people to sell things and the saying “misery loves company”, but instead using Missouri. And turning them both into something positive, just to spread love, happiness, and continuous dreams into reality.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not a smooth road. Just finding myself was process along with financial difficulties. Also, you have the pressure of falling back into unhealthy environments and dealing with people that aren’t good for your progress as a person.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Right now, I’m just in full entrepreneurial mode, focused on growing my clothing business and music. Of course, I do work to fund my ideas but full time, I’m just a dad. What sets me apart from others is just my life experiences and sheer determination honestly. We can all be great but we have to put the work in and never quit.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love our people the most. And the opportunity is endless for idealistic people like myself.

Anything I dislike is an idea for a creation so there is nothing I dislike.
