Rising Stars: Meet Taylor Kaup

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Kaup.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
When I started Wyatt & Quinn Photo Co. it was a huge passion project for me. I have always loved photography and when my son was born I really dove into it more, asking friends and family to do sessions so I could practice. It took a lot of practice and learning different skills, but I have loved every moment.

Now almost 10 years later, I still get so excited to meet new families and document so many different parts of life. One of my very first paying clients 10 years ago is still with me today, I booked her engagement session, then wedding, maternity, newborn, family, maternity again, newborn again and so many family sessions in between. I absolutely love growing and watching families grow. It really is the highest compliment when a family comes back to you over and over again.

I started Wyatt & Quinn Clay Co. in the lovely year of 2020. I am a creator by nature, I love all of it and I believe my passion for art started when I was younger, I would spend summer days with my grandmother who was the most incredible artist in Wichita, I feel I really learned patience in art and the love for all types of art through her. Whenever I create anything I always think, what would Grandma Carole do.

So when Covid hit and photography slowed down I had to find another outlet – working with clay-filled that needed to work with my hands and I started making earrings. Another creator Jules Co. saw them and loved them as much as I did so slowly I started creating more and more learning along the way and now here I am about a year later loving every piece I create and getting to share with the world!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
With photography, I will say that was hard work! It still is I constantly leave every session reflecting on what I could do better next time, and I feel that’s what drives me to continue to grow. I don’t believe I will ever feel like I will know everything there is to know about photography and honestly, I don’t want to, I always tell myself to reflect, relearn and grow!

I’m also a firm believer in community over competition, I have watched some absolutely amazing photographers grow around me and it is such an honor when one comes to me about a question, or assist them with a session, I adore teaching and helping and hope one day, I can have a platform to teach all things photography!

With clay earrings, OMG yes! When I first started, I didn’t realize some clay was more durable than others so I had some snaps over and over and it was so frustrating, but after lots of YouTube videos; I learned what I needed to do better and adapted.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I love people! I love watching small businesses and women-owned businesses grow and I am lucky to be in a community with so many creators! It makes me so proud to watch them thrive and do their thing!

I know how important it is to have quality images for your website and social media, so when I see a new small business I always reach out and see if I can help with product images! or a lot of time I will go buy the product and do a little session with the product and send it to them.

Again… community over competition I love these people.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Absolutely, when Covid hit in 2020 it really slowed down my photography, weddings were canceled, family sessions were canceled, etc.

It was hard. But I was able to start another business and had time to dedicate to building and learning and it hit me this past year in July of 2021 how proud I was of my accomplishments when I was finally in a spot where I could leave my full time – corporate America job and just create and live for my passions!

So many happy tears were shed that month knowing I could put everything I had on the table and just create! It was a blessing in disguise that’s for sure!
