Rising Stars: Meet Tammy Jordan of South Overland Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tammy Jordan.

Hi Tammy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was working a full time job as Director of Operations (for about 10 years) at a local private tennis club when my husband got a stage 4 lymphoma diagnosis. As a way to relieve stress and since I couldn’t be with people with him at high risk with no immune system I started pet sitting. After seeing such a high demand for pet care in the comfort of their own home I decided to quit my job and filed for an LLC and went full time. I’ve been super blessed to have an amazing client base develop naturally mostly through word of mouth. Thankfully my husband has been in remission following his year after his stem cell transplant (our daughter was his donor) and I’ve never looked back on this endeavor I went on three years ago.
Animals feed my soul and I have found a huge comfort and new sense of purpose now that my kids are grown. My son has joined me in helping me out with my business as well and it’s been so much fun having this to share with each other.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been a fairly smooth road! I’ve been super blessed to have found my niche and the right client base. I got busy quickly and thankfully my son was home following his graduation of high school to help me care for his dad so we could both be involved in his care and for starting my business.
I think the natural challenges that come with owning a new business are similar to most. You have to learn some things the hard way, learn to set boundaries sooner than later and not back down from knowing what you’re worth.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I offer a range of services mostly in-home pet care – daily care and vacation care, I also offer pet taxi and pet chaperone services. I offer a service of peace of mind that doesn’t always come with a kennel or the neighbor/friend. I am very serious about what I do and having the appropriate qualifications is a must. I take immense pride in caring for someone’s babies like they’re my own and it isn’t something just anyone can offer.

I recently got interested in offering pet care to retirement communities. A lot of their residents own pets but find themselves in need of more care than they can manage with exercise, feedings when they’re ill, following surgeries or at risk of getting injured while taking their pets out. This has allowed me to connect with the owners in a way I haven’t before which I’ve really enjoyed.

I have found I have a special connection to the senior animals and those who are highly anxious. I’ve had several clients who said their dogs don’t like anyone but them and we’ve connected immediately. I know animals read energy and I think they find a comforting presence in me.

I’m really proud of myself for stepping out of the box and getting into a new business under extremely stressful situations.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I have five rescues. Three dogs and two cats.

Nothing else I can think of! I’m honored to be considered!
