Rising Stars: Meet Steven of Other

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steven.

Hi Steven, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
The Story of 5th Avenue Cigars – Anchorage, Alaska
Located in the heart of downtown Anchorage, 5th Avenue Cigars has become a destination for Alaska’s cigar enthusiasts and tobacco connoisseurs. Situated at 531 East 5th Avenue, the business carries on a tradition rooted in Anchorage’s tobacco history. The location was once home to Pete’s Tobacco, a beloved local tobacco shop founded by Pete Switzer in the 1990s. Pete built a reputation among Alaska’s cigar and pipe-smoking community, creating a place where enthusiasts could find quality tobacco and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow smokers. After Pete’s passing and the eventual closing of the original shop around 2016, a new chapter began. The new ownership took on the challenge of preserving the spirit and tradition of the location while creating something that could continue serving Alaska’s growing cigar community. Their goal was not simply to operate another tobacco store, but to restore a familiar Anchorage landmark and build upon the legacy that came before it.

Today, 5th Avenue Cigars continues that tradition with a commitment to quality, selection, and customer service. Featuring the largest walk-in humidor in all of Alaska and an extensive selection of premium cigars, pipe tobacco, rolling tobacco, pipes, and accessories, the shop strives to offer something for everyone, from the occasional smoker to the experienced cigar aficionado. Its dedication extends beyond the products on the shelves, emphasizing personal service, product knowledge, and building lasting relationships with customers throughout Alaska. The addition of Lounge on 5th further strengthens that vision by providing members with a comfortable place to relax, enjoy a fine cigar, and connect with others who share the same appreciation. At its heart, 5th Avenue Cigars represents more than a tobacco retailer; it represents the preservation of a local tradition, a passion for fine tobacco, and a commitment to keeping Alaska’s cigar culture alive for generations to come.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The tobacco industry in Alaska faces a number of unique challenges that make operating a tobacco business particularly difficult. High transportation costs, remote locations, and Alaska’s harsh climate make importing and distributing tobacco products significantly more expensive than in many other states. Businesses must also navigate strict state and local regulations, increasing taxes, licensing requirements, and ongoing changes in tobacco laws that can create additional financial and administrative burdens. Anchorage and other Alaska communities face a relatively small customer base compared to larger markets. This makes it difficult for us to grow and expand our operations. Additionally, online retail pricing beats out our costs, making online sales a tough competitor. Additionally, rising operating expenses, shipping delays, and the costs of maintaining properly climate-controlled cigar humidors add to the challenges. Despite these obstacles, 5th Avenue Cigars has continued to provide the Anchorage and surrounding communities with specialty products, and knowledgeable customer service. Customer service is our most important priority.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We have a knowledgeable tobacconist staff. We also have one of four Tobacco Sommeliers in the entire state of Alaska in our employ. Several key features distinguish us apart from other tobacco providers in the state. We have the largest walk in humidor in the entire state. We also have arguably the best smoking lounge in all of Alaska. Our lounge has several large TV’s and we have subscriptions that enable us to watch any sporting event, UFC fights, even the Olympics. We offer wifi and free water to our lounge members. Members are also allowed to bring food and alcoholic beverages with them, although we do not sell any ourselves. The lounge itself can be reserved for private events as well. We’ve hosted cigar promotional events, comedy shows as well as private birthday parties.
