Rising Stars: Meet Stephanie Wilson

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Wilson.

STEPHANIE WILSON

Hi Stephanie, thanks for sharing your story with us. Maybe you can tell our readers some of your back story.
I started helping my brother, Tom, and cousin, Josh, at BBQ competitions by getting sponsorships and smoking/grilling meat for the Friday evening gatherings. After the 1997 American Royal, they asked me to be a cooking member of the team. My brother passed away in January 1998 from cardiomyopathy. I asked my friend, Kyle Laval, if he would help me fulfill what was supposed to be.

We cooked a few in ’98, and Josh joined us when he could. We made it a family affair with my son, Brent, cooking kids’ que, our folks coming out and enjoying our wares, my sister, Val, as our runner, and friends, and family coming out to our Friday night gatherings. Next thing you know, we produce sauces and rubs, traveling across the country smoking meats.

We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was difficult raising a child, working full time, competing a lot, and trying to find a good balance. With the help of my folks, my sister, and my neighbors, I was able to get that accomplished. The line “It takes a Village” is completely true!!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe you can tell us more about your work next?
The competition team is now myself, my sister, Valerie, Brent, and a family friend, Reed.

We cook a few times a year. However, I mainly focus on the product line, doing demonstrations, consulting, and educating people through cooking classes. For 20 years, I have volunteered my time and product to BBQ groups that help fight hunger. I’m proud that my son has that instilled in him, as he’s been with me every step of the way.

What sets me apart from others is that I mean what I say and do what I say. You’re only as good as your word.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Planning. It’s a good quality and a curse. I’d rather get it done sooner rather than later. I don’t want things sitting on my plate. If I have a job to do, make a list, make a plan, spell it out, delegate, get it done.
