Rising Stars: Meet Shannon Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Johnson.

Hi Shannon, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?

The desire to take photographs has been strong since I was in grade school. I would always take disposable cameras with the winding flash to capture memories throughout the school year. All my friends knew they could count on me to be the photographer no matter the occasion. I have photo albums full of pictures I took during that special time in my life. I’ve been fortunate enough to transition with technology where my cameras are concerned and upgraded to the one I use today which helps me to do what I love.

I was not always so sure of being a professional photographer. I initially purchased my camera because I wanted to be a vlogger or a YouTube sensation helping women to see the value in themselves regardless of the decisions they’ve made, unfortunate circumstances they’ve experienced or their relationship status. As I continued to produce content for my channel, I realized it was not giving me the joy I hoped it would. So, I transitioned into photography as a hobby and did not realize how much I would love it! I absolutely adore how much beauty I can create while behind the lens.

I have captured so many memories for people that will last beyond a lifetime. It is also so gratifying the story that can be told with just one image. Photography is a great escape for me, and I am so glad I did not allow fear to stop me from trying this artform because it has changed my life. I was surprised at the ability I had to take photographs because I consistently that I was not artistic. I always thought of myself as more of an orator which is also another reason I took the YouTube route; however, photography came so natural to me. Shan’s Snaps Photography is a testament to me taking a leap of faith and believing I am capable to anything I give my all.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The biggest challenge I experience is time management. Due to Shan’s Snaps Photography being so new, I still currently work a full-time job. I am mostly available on the weekends to take appointments for photographs. I would have more liberty in scheduling if I was not juggling two occupations. However, I also love my current position as a Behavior Interventionist at a local elementary school here in Kansas City, Missouri. So, an additional challenge is knowing the appropriate time to forsake my current position to fully pursue photography. I know that would be a huge leap of faith, but timing is everything.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a portrait photographer who specializes in styles such as family, branding, solo portraits, maternity, engagement and much more! I believe I am most known for vibrant photos. I love to bring out the light and beauty in each photograph I take. I love the light to shine through every single one! I am most proud of knowing that art can never be wrong and tapping into my creative ability helps me to create the best art I could ever imagine. I am proud of not comparing my work to others and celebrating every photographer that exists because we all have something great to offer our clients.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I am not a huge believer in luck due to being a Christian, so when things go exceptionally well, I consider that God’s favor and when they don’t I see that as a lesson I need to learn. The favor of God that I have experienced is having the ability to create art, friends that encourage me and help strengthen my craft, and clients that trust me to bring their desires to fruition. A huge lesson I learned was to invest wisely because it is easy to allow ambition to be your guide. Not to be misunderstood, ambition is great and necessary, but it can cause some heavy consequences without proper planning.
