Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Geelan.
Hi Sara, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Kansas City Oasis was formed in 2014 as an alternative to faith based communities. We offer community without dogma and accept everyone regardless of their beliefs. We have our regular gathering every Sunday, which includes a main presenter, a talk from a community member, and live music. Our presenters are on a large range of topics, from local nonprofits to historians and authors and everything in between. We also offer social events and engagement with philanthropy.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Obtaining a full-time space was a difficult goal. Over the years we have rented space in Kansas City one day per week, in several locations, including The Delta Atheneum, The Uptown Theater and most recently UMKC, all who deserve credit for supporting us. Two years ago we were able to rent our current location full-time! Most of the updates and repairs are Oasis’ responsibility, in adfition to utilities and insurance, which is an ongoing struggle. Promotion is another struggle, and although we are constantly getting more name recognition, we strive to make more connections. We have done some advertising, but do not have the funds to make it a consistent priority at this time.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are known for being the only secular community in Kansas City. There are many atheist and freethinkers groups, which is often confused with secular. Oasis is not anti -religion, just the absence of. Therefore we include people, wherever they are in their beliefs and/or nonbeliefs. We are proud of our charity work and helping to better our local community. We schedule one philanthropy event per month and complete a task for charity every fifth Sunday. We have volunteered weekly beside Christians at Micah Ministeries for over ten years and have forged lasting friendships and understanding.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
We will always be a safe space where people can be themselves and be accepted, form bonds with others, and help their local community.
