Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Dean.
Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
I’ve always been creative and a maker. I graduated from Baylor University with a degree in Film & Digital media. There hasn’t been a time when I wasn’t exercising my artistic ability. Over the years, it has looked different as I’ve been in various stages of life. But about 10 years ago, I started to push myself to learn graphic design. My sister and I started a small hobby business making custom digital Christmas cards and baby announcements. Through 5 cross-country moves and 4 children, it has evolved into doing logo design and commissioned art and portraiture. Recently, I was one of 40 artists selected to create a heart for the Kansas City Parade of Hearts. It has been an incredible experience and helped me to feel connected to other artists in the Kansas City area.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nothing worth doing is ever smooth, from my experience. In an ideal world, I would have constant creative inspiration, zero interruptions, and unlimited funds! Being a mom has made having an unconventional job difficult. But I also find some of my greatest inspiration in my family. Another struggle has been seeing my footing and community in the creative world when our family has made several big moves. But I have been privileged not to rely on any income from my art. It has allowed me to try new things and fail often!
Thanks for sharing that. So, you could tell us a bit more about your work.
I am an illustrator and logo designer. I’ve done logos for small businesses, corporate and sports teams, t-shirt designs, marketing and print materials, and so on! If a client needs a graphic for their brand, I will make it happen. What sets me apart is that I love to collaborate. And it takes work! Sometimes I have an idea for what would be fun or look great, but it’s not what the client envisioned. I am mindful of this dynamic and give my expertise while ensuring the client’s needs are met. It’s like a complicated puzzle, and I enjoy the challenge. I don’t have one specific project I’m most proud of, but I feel most proud when a client gets excited about our work. It’s a special thing to hop on the same wavelength with someone else’s vision!
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Art is for everyone. Even if you don’t think you’re creative or artistic, you can find the art in problem-solving. Whatever field you’re in, whether science, finance, or education, you can get creative and imagine new ways to do things. To me, this is art, too. I want everyone to use their imaginations in every corner of the world because that improves this place.
