Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryann Cheek
Hi Ryann, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started my creative journey at a young age, always drawn to art whether it was drawing, painting, or exploring digital art. I had a passion for creating, but I didn’t fully feel fulfilled until I discovered photography in high school. I joined yearbook and picked up a camera for the first time. After graduating high school, I bought my own camera and began experimenting with photography.
As a student-athlete in college, I had to put photography on hold for a few years. Once I moved past my athletic career, I decided to pursue photography more seriously. What began as a side project for friends and family quickly grew into something bigger, and I found myself building a reputation in my small town in Eldridge, Iowa. Now, as I prepare to graduate college in May, I’m excited to relocate to Kansas City, MO, and expand my business by working with new clients in the area. It’s been a journey of discovering my true passion and watching it evolve from a hobby to doing something I love as a job!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Doing photography in my small hometown was relatively easy, as word of mouth from friends and family helped me quickly gain clients, and I was in a comfortable routine. However, when I found out I was moving to Kansas City, I knew my business would essentially be starting from scratch, and I’d have to build a new clientele. I know the road ahead won’t be smooth, as establishing myself as a photographer in a big, unfamiliar city will take time. Despite the challenges, I’m excited to face them and connect with clients who are looking for creative photography. The Kansas City skyline, architecture, and expansive parks are all new to me, and I can’t wait to expand my portfolio while working with clients who are willing to give me a chance as a photographer new to the city.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Hi, I’m Ryann, the photographer behind Ryann Cheek Photography. I specialize in capturing authentic, creative moments through portrait photography. My favorite subjects to photograph are couples (I absolutely love love!), weddings and engagements, seniors, and graduates. These are memorable milestones and I’m passionate about freezing those moments in time for my clients. My focus is on creating a genuine connection with my clients, drawing out their true personalities, and capturing unique moments through my lens. I’m known for my creativity, especially in utilizing natural lighting and crafting aesthetically pleasing compositions that result in images that are both candid and artistic. What sets me apart from others is my commitment to making each session feel personal. I don’t just aim to take beautiful photos; I want my clients to feel at ease and confident in front of the camera. My approach is about more than just snapping pictures, it’s about capturing real moments that truly reflect who they are. I also strive to break away from the traditional norms of photography. What some might call “bad” lighting, I see as an opportunity to create something unique and artistic. That’s my goal with every session! What I’m most proud of is how my work resonates with my clients and the relationships I’ve built along the way. Whether it’s a couple’s engagement or an individual portrait, I love seeing my clients’ reactions when they see their images. Their connection with the photos is what drives my passion for photography. As I continue to grow my business, I’m excited to take on new challenges, expand my portfolio, and create more lasting memories for those who trust me to tell their story through photography.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I’m 22 years old and only started photography a year ago, but one of the biggest compliments I receive is that it doesn’t feel like I’ve only been doing this for such a short time. While some might assume I lack experience because of how long I’ve been a photographer, creativity has always been a big part of who I am, making my creative journey a lifelong experience.
