Rising Stars: Meet Rachel Davis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Davis.

Hi Rachel, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, let’s briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
In April 2020, I was working on completing my Associate’s degree from home and looking for a creative outlet. I started creating miniatures and jewelry out of polymer clay in my free time and posting on Instagram. I’ve always loved making things by hand, and this was a wonderful hobby that quickly turned into a side business. I also found a fantastic online community that encouraged me to continue. After about a year, I participated in a local art fair called Art Garden KC. This group is still strong and is a wonderful opportunity for any artist or creative person in Kansas City! I am so grateful to them for their community-minded support and low start-up costs for vendors. Their art fairs gave me more confidence as a small business which has, in turn, given me more inspiration to continue making art and trying new avenues as I change and grow. Since 2020, I have branched out to several art fairs and art shows. I rarely turn down an opportunity. I love working with people one-on-one and creating custom artwork or jewelry for people. It is gratifying to give someone an artistic creation they will cherish using the daily skills I practice. Today, I focus mainly on creating custom artwork for people interested in my illustrations and paintings. I’m working on designing a logo and custom labels for a tea company as well as designing an original playing card game. I also have several personal studies of still-life acrylic paintings. I plan to continue to develop a portfolio of artwork and designs I can feel proud of and make a positive difference in people’s lives, even if that is as small as creating a custom illustration they can hang in their homes. Creating art for others has felt rewarding because I hear stories about them as people and grow a real connection with the person I’m providing a service for. I have made many friends through this profession, and I’m so grateful to anyone who trusts me with their vision.

Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the challenging aspects of starting a creative business is the cost. There are going to be a lot of upfront costs. But this doesn’t discourage people from creating art, even if it is simply for themselves. There are several creative ways to keep costs at a minimum. One of the best places in KC that sell art supplies is Scraps KC. It is a thrift store for artists. I once purchased a large canvas that generally cost me $40 or more for only $2.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I paint original still-life paintings and illustrations that often celebrate nature. I also create small batches of handmade jewelry using fine metals and polymer clay. Some of my popular creations include floral heart earrings with pearls. I created several pairs of these for art fairs. My original rose painting is also popular; I’ve sold several prints. What sets me apart is the amount of care and detail I pour into everything I do. One of the most common comments I get is how I must have a lot of patience. I am dedicated to testing my abilities until I am happy with the result. It’s essential to me that the customer is happy too. I want to gift them a thing they can cherish for years. I am most proud of the impact I have made when someone tells me the jewelry or illustration I created exceeded their expectations. This is so gratifying because I have created art my entire life, and it often feels like my purpose to create for others.

Any big plans?
I am open to the possibilities in the future. I would love to continue creating custom pieces or designs for people interested in my work. I am also excited to continue building my portfolio to test my abilities.
