Rising Stars: Meet Pamela Devlin of Lawrence – Greenroom Salon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Pamela Devlin.

Hi Pamela, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I graduated from Aveda Institute Minneapolis and have been doing hair for 15 years. I currently do hair in the salon, specializing in creative color, natural color blending, and extensions. I also work with a team of editorial stylists along with the Hair Awards USA. I am passionate about cultivating editorial education opportunities in spaces typically considered inaccessible.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Nooooope! Haha! I hadn’t done hair at a salon for a couple of years, just independent gigs. I didn’t have a full, consistent clientele, but I had an opportunity to start working as an independent contractor. Beginning as an independent contractor is a lot of pressure. You take full responsibility for the whole business, and while it’s exciting to cultivate your livelihood and career, it’s not easy, especially as a solo parent. At one point in my career, I wasn’t working behind the chair since I had been a single mom of two for about a year. I really had to trust in myself and my work when putting myself out there to rebuild my business during that season. It was a big risk, but it was worth it!

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have enjoyed collaborating alongside other creatives through the Hair Awards USA! For the last couple of years, I’ve been a part of the Midwest, Southwest, and Southeast Hairstyling Awards and the teams as a part of it. Working alongside my dear friend Peter Gray (incredibly talented and world-renowned editorial hairdresser) and several other collaborators, we have not only created beautiful art and images, but we have worked to change how education works in this industry. We have created immersive and unique educational and collaborative opportunities for other professionals to dive into. It’s something this industry craves, to be a part of something greater, but also something that can be a challenge, especially here in the Midwest. I love being a part of the collective that works to create connections, advance artistry, and propel ourselves and each other forward.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those just starting.
Find the space between being professional and creative. That’s where we thrive. A rising tide raises all ships. Elevate your work, champion others, and foster authenticity with yourself and those around you. Set boundaries!
