Rising Stars: Meet Nicole Henson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Henson.

Hi Nicole, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have always been intrigued by interior design. From a young age, I would move my furniture around, add new decorations, art and small objects just to give it a different look and vibe. At just 17, I had my first daughter and knew this career was a risky one to take. I needed something that would secure a lifestyle for myself and my daughter. I went into dental assisting school where I was trained how to be a dental assistant with expanded functions in orthodontics. For the next 15 years, I had a career as an Orthodontic Assistant. I continued my passion for interior design on the side mostly a free service for friends and family. In 2018 my husband was promoted and we accepted a new job and location that took us to Texas where we were able to build a new house.

At this time, I took an early retirement from the Orthodontic assisting world and was so fortunate to be able to stay home with our then nine years old daughter. My extra time allowed me to get back to what I loved doing! I was not only styling my new home but I was also helping a local builder. Our stay in Texas was cut short when we were transferred back to Kansas City. Shortly after our return and finally getting settled in, the Pandemic hit and found myself giving free advice once again to friends on social media needing help with their remodeling projects, new at home office spaces, styling projects, etc. In that moment, I stopped giving my advice for free and set a fee for my work. My first paid project was a guest bedroom, which turned into a social media account, which turned into a business KC INTERIOR CO. in July of 2020. Since July 2020, I am exactly where I am supposed to be, doing what my lifelong dream has been and I have not looked back! The term when you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life resonates with me and has reminded me you are never too old to change your career or your life!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I definitely have had my challenges along the way, I am a strong believer that these challenges are learning curves to teach you and make you stronger. The pandemic definitely had its downsides not being able to go into client’s homes. We were able to have some meetings virtually that helped along the way.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My specialty is interior design this includes styling furniture, helping on design with new builds and remodels. What sets me apart from most interior designers is being able to not only bring my style into client’s homes but elevate and find their own style. I think it’s important to allow a client to find what they love. When my work is done, they will be walking through the doors on daily basis not myself. I want to make sure they are happy and love the work! I am most proud of the way I have navigated and grew a business during a pandemic.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
The smile on my client’s faces when they see the big reveal of the project we created together!
