Rising Stars: Meet Molly Higgins of Leawood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Molly Higgins.

Molly, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Molly and I am born and raised in Kansas City, Prairie Village and Brookside are where I grew up. I currently live in Leawood with my husband and two kids, Kylie 12, Brayden 11. I have loved flowers and art since I can remember! I started using my babysitting money all the way back in 5th grade to buy fresh flowers for my bedroom and I went to KU for graphic design back in the early 2000’s. I met my husband at the ripe age of 21, got a job in healthcare and never looked back! Fast forward 15 years and I just simply needed to refill my soul! I decided to start up this business after doing a few side projects and hearing peoples reviews, I thought “I can do this!” I just started on foot going in doors and introducing myself and so here we are! I love doing large statement art installs and florals for any special event! Every artist is unique, of course! But I like to think I have an extra artistic spin to my arrangements. I hear often that my combinations are different and unexpected and this is exactly what I aim for! I love seeing people get excited over something I’ve created for them. Exceeding expectations is my biggest goal, always!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting a business is a lot more, logistically, than I anticipated! There is no one behind you telling you what to do or how to do it. I have felt like I have been flailing in the wind at moments! My biggest struggle personally, has been in my own mind. I think it’s easy to doubt yourself. We have to be intentional about staying positive sometimes. I always try to remind myself that not everyday will be brilliant, and that’s ok. Fake it til you make it, right?! It has been an incredibly rewarding AND challenging experience! It’s also shown me that I am a lot smarter than I often give myself credit for. If you want something, you have to take risks. Fear creates compromise. Hard work is a beautiful thing and I am not afraid of hard work. Always go for your dreams. I expect to be turned down, I expect some people to not love my work, and I expect to have bumps. But nothing, worth anything, comes easy! I just keep going!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My favorite work pieces to do are the big custom art installations. My favorite piece I have done is probably the 7ft by 8ft custom floral wall piece for Paint Nail Bar out at Hawthorne Plaza by Town Center. I also really love the custom piece I made for Fowling Warehouse. And the large piece I made for Twin Oaks Event Venue. I love them all, honestly! I would say custom pieces for sure. I also love doing event florals. Currently, that is what I am doing the most of, wedding florals. I particularly love tropicals, I am most versed in these, but I love it all. I tend to go a little outside of the box with my arrangements and love to do living arrangements over cut flowers. I love doing cut flowers too, though! I love it all! I hear often, “I wouldn’t have thought to put those flowers together!” and I think my art background gives my work a bit of a unique twist. Although we all have our own unique twist to our work! I love color. I love vibrant and loud. I think my personality really shows in my work. Loud and fun!

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I would love to see myself doing loads of event florals and weddings. I would love to do more custom pieces for local businesses around all of Kansas City. I would love to see my work all over this city! That is my dream! Just to be able to create and make people smile and see some beauty in their day. I love working with other artists and doing collaborations the most, truly. I love working with other creative people and coming up with something beautiful! I just truly want to help create beautiful spaces for people to help in celebrating their biggest life moments.
