Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Haskell.
Hi Michael, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My passion for writing poetry is what actually opened the door to becoming an artist. Music being an outlet and a big part of my upbringing is what influenced me to create my own music. I started making music while in college for the film which worked to my advantage cause it lead to me being able to shoot and edit my own music videos.
My love for all genres of music is what sets my music apart from my peers and has set the tone for my music.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My musical journey hasn’t been smooth by far, getting people to relate, support, and most of all, believing in you has been challenging. The stigma of everyone wanting to be a rapper for popularity reasons makes it difficult for true artists to have a platform to exhibit their work.
Losing my mentor who played a major part in my transition from poetry to rapping has been my biggest challenge in my personal life as well as in my rap career. My passion for writing has truly gotten me through so many more challenges and also helped me perfect my craft.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a hip-hop artist, songwriter, and photographer/videographer. I am known for incorporating my love for fashion and film into my music and videos. I am most proud of launching my website, the opportunities to perform in several states, opening for Mobb Deep, Krizz Kaliko, The Alchemist, and more, and releasing my mixtape, “The Blackest Days: Unmastered” to all streaming platforms.
Kanye West’s Donda (Deluxe) helped me come up with the idea of releasing all my earlier songs from the last 5-10 years with my project “The Blackest Days: Unmastered” onto all DSPs and streaming platforms. Kanye’s album is his “Book of Life” album and “The Blackest Days: Unmastered” is mine. Very personal and honest.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I have learned on my journey of becoming an artist is to always believe in yourself and never give up because your moment can come when you least expect it.
