Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Hopper.
Hi Matt, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Started Jazz and music theory studies at Shawnee Mission Northwest under Doug Tally. Continued studies at UMKC with Bobby Watson and Doug Niedt. Private lessons with Danny Embrey and Rod Fleeman. Performing with Everette DeVan group.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Struggles are getting started. Luckily there were lots of jam sessions. To be able to meet musicians and start or join.groups.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Traveling abroad to perform and learn! Performing and teaching jazz master classes in Brazil. Performing in Paris. Being able to record and perform my original music at Green Lady Lounge. Being a guest with the KC Symphony. Teaching at KCCC and Ottawa University.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Luck for me is word-of-mouth recommendations.
