Rising Stars: Meet Mary Salatino

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Salatino.

Mary Salatino

Hi Mary, I’m so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, how can you bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My full-time career is in journalism — I currently work remotely as a copywriter and do freelance reporting here and there. I was gifted a camera in college and took some photos to accompany my articles. I started modeling four years ago, and it was six months into modeling I decided I wanted to try things from the other side of the camera as well. I’ve built my business over the past two years and have enjoyed photographing various people and concepts. I photograph models/editorial, families, kids, engagement/couples, newborns, and more. I’m glad I decided to take photography to a creative level and start my own business. I’ve enjoyed providing services to the Kansas City area while connecting with other creatives and clients.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There’s nothing smooth about starting something new; life is about doing something worth the struggle. Building my business has been slow and steady. I mainly book my clients through social media, so it’s important that my Instagram is updated and showcases my recent work. Booking clients was hard initially, but it’s become easier as I make new connections and grow my online presence.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. What can you tell our readers who might need to be more familiar with what you do?
As a photographer, I’m best known for my portraits and creative style. I’m organized and personable and enjoy establishing relationships with whomever I photograph. As a journalist, I’m a storyteller. I like my photos to tell a story and allow the subject’s personality to shine through. Because I also model, I enjoy taking self-portraits. Being the model and photographer simultaneously is a fun experience because it allows me to be even more creative.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some changes you expect to see over the next five to ten years?
Photography is an art that keeps growing. The photography/modeling community is large and tight-knit in Kansas City, making it easy to find people who want to collaborate to bring your ideas to life.
