Rising Stars: Meet Mark Thies of Roeland Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Thies.

Mark, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I began running Markosa Studios part time in 1985. It was a small operation and I ran it out of my basement. I operated part time mostly because I had a full-time job outside of the house. In 1988 I decided to leave my full-time job and pursue recording full-time. I went to UMKC to take some recording classes, upgraded my equipment and began down the path that has taken me to where I am. In 2005 I constructed a 1500 square-foot facility off of the back of my house. It is purpose built for recording and completely state-of-the-art.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Far from a smooth road, but obstacles were removed one by one and I was allowed to build. What is now Markosa Studios, My dream facility.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a musician as well as a recording artist as well as an engineer and studio owner. My love of music sent me down this path. I am the youngest of seven children and most all of them are musicians and some form. Both of my parents were musicians. One of my parents supported my path. The other one did not. I set out to help people Achieve their dreams in regards to Music. That goal has never changed. I believe that if you set out to help people, you will be successful.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
A life-changing book for me is The Artist’ Way by Julia Cameron. That book helped me walk away from my day job and try chasing my dream.
The Tao de Ching continues to be an inspiration as well as the works of Rumi and Hafiz.
