Today we’d like to introduce you to Kirsten Sundell.
Hi Kirsten, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have always had a love for vintage and antique decor, growing up going to auctions with my parents. When I got my own space, I wanted it to feel curated and cozy, not staged and just following the latest trends. 15 years ago, my youngest went of to school and I was looking for a part time flexible job. The idea of a pop up antique sale once a month, resinated with me. I had no problem finding some like minded vintage lovers to start up the store. We found a little warehouse down a gravel road to rent, and it became our Red Apron home. We have grown to 17 vendors who create a new space each and every month for our shoppers to enjoy! Customers often want to shop in between sales, but we start completely transforming our space as soon as one sale is over, in anticipation of the next!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As with all businesses there have been a few struggles. I didn’t take a paycheck for two years, but our customer base grew and we experienced some incredible growth after that. 2020 threw us for a loop. For five years we have tried to get back on track. In a last ditch effort, I started working with a digital media team that helped us turn things around. It is hard to spend more money when it is short, but it was the right decision to make. Their expertise and large reach has been a game changer.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
The Red Apron specializes in vintage and antique home decor, plus home made items from local artisans. What sets us apart from other antique shops is our personal touch. We all work each sale and get to know our customers. We are excited when our regulars come in, and look forward to seeing new faces! It is like old home week each month, and we laugh and engage with our customers, while helping them find special one of kind items to beautiful their homes.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
We make a huge effort to get to know our customers. We want them to feel welcome and seen. Their generosity allows us to do what we love the most and we are grateful.
