Rising Stars: Meet Kerri Dahl of Kansas City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kerri Dahl.

Hi Kerri, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up in a musical family and through my early years had exposure to and picked up 8 different instruments, often going in to the orchestra or band at lunch in middle school to play additional instruments.

I attended the Las Vegas Academy for high school and had many performance opportunities, including singing in the white house, going on a European concert tour, and singing backup for Giovanni. I am incredibly grateful for these opportunities.

I have been teaching for over 27 years, both in Las Vegas (I am a native!) and here in Cameron Missouri, including running a multi-state studio and overseeing and training teachers in the 12 programs for newborns to adults. All of my programs are research based and look to the work of Edwin Gordon’s Music Learning Theory. All of the programs are inclusive of those with disabilities and special needs – an important aspect to me, as a mom of special needs and medically fragile kids.

I have worked with government and community organizations such as Friends of Parkinson’s, The North Las Vegas Libraries, and The Library District, to bring inclusive, high quality music experiences to individuals, families, and communities. I have seen miraculous things through the power of music!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like every family, ours has had its share of challenges.

We have been touched by suicide, loss of grandparents, abuse, divorce, chronic pain, and diagnoses of terminal illness, to name a few.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
In addition to directing and teaching in my music studio, I am a self published author, painter, composer, and recording musician.

I specialize in musical improvisation and teaching the language of music, not just teaching how to decode notation.

I am a presenter on early childhood music development.

I love to spend my time playing my instruments, singing, painting, writing poetry, and facilitating community musical experiences.

I have a deep appreciation for and love for at risk groups and love to volunteer. I volunteer musically and in other ways in my church and in my community. I was just nominated to be the president of our local Optimist International club. I love service.

I feel most alive when I am conducting one of my choirs.

I believe everyone is musical and music is for everyone.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Just that you, yes, you reading this article, are musical!

Whether you think you are or not, you are. Research has proven it.

You can participate in the musical experience and you can pass down a love for music and ability to sing and dance to your children and grandchildren. Our programs can help you do that, regardless of personal ability.

Music heals, it connects, and we need to normalize music making in our culture. (Non performative, exploratory, messy, full hearted music making!)
