Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenzie Cox.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always been passionate about photography. When I first began taking on clients, I was sure that I didn’t want to be a wedding photographer. Weddings seemed a bit intimidating to me, and to be honest, I think there was just a lot that I didn’t understand about them. Eventually, I accepted an opportunity to photograph an intimate backyard wedding ceremony. I was nervous but so excited and I walked away from that day on such a high!
I shot a few more weddings after this, still warming up to it. But after experiencing my own wedding day in the fall of 2019, I was hooked. My amazing wedding photographers (Cass & Ty Photo Co.) photographed moments I didn’t realize they were there for and captured my wedding day in such a special way, I know I’ll never forget it. It made me realize that even the little details are important and it meant so much to me that I knew I had to be just as detailed with my own work for my clients to enjoy. I still get goosebumps when I look at my wedding photos and I want everyone to remember their day that way. Marriage has been the biggest blessing in my life, and it makes my heart so happy to have a job centered around documenting something so special.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Pursuing a creative career has it’s ups and downs for sure! For me personally, I think the biggest thing that I often find myself facing is the struggle of comparison and feeling burnt out. It’s easy to get in your head as a creative and compare yourself to other popular artists that seem like they’re doing bigger and better things than you. To get myself out of this funk, I just remind myself of how far I’ve come since I first started and it’s also reassuring to look at the progress in my work since I first began photography.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m primarily a wedding and couples photographer, although I still take on family and portrait sessions! Something that I’d say I’m most proud of is pushing myself out of my comfort zone. When I first began photography, weddings and couple’s sessions made me nervous. Posing and prompting my subjects stressed me out because the goal is to make your clients feel comfortable and to help them look as natural as possible. Although it felt challenging to me to pose two people together naturally, I kept at it and now it’s my favorite thing to do. Every couple is different and I love asking questions beforehand to find out more about my clients and their relationship. I want every session to feel totally authentic to each and every couple.
What matters most to you? Why?
Client experience is absolutely one of the things that matters most to me. Getting in front of a camera is a super vulnerable thing, no matter how many times you’ve done it. As a photographer, I still feel awkward in front of a camera! I try to match the energy that every couple or client brings and only initiate poses that they’re comfortable with. Experience is everything.
