Rising Stars: Meet KaMille Washington of Kansas City

Today we’d like to introduce you to KaMille  Washington

Hi KaMille, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Since I was a young girl I knew I wanted to help others who were going through challenging situations. My faith and belief in God had been the core of my existence and helping others seemed like my life’s work. And that in itself comes trails and test even for myself, some self inflicted and some just life circumstances. I know a lot about challenges. I became a teen mom to a beautiful baby boy at the age of 17, persevered and graduated on schedule. I continued my education and attended Penn Valley Community College and graduated from UMKC with a BA in Psychology and a minor in Family Studies. My heart has always been to encourage and support others in a impactful way. I began my career in 2005 when I started working for a domestic violence agency. I worked in the field for nearly 15 years. I had gotten married in 2011 and a significant life shift was in 2013 when I lost my husband suddenly. On so many levels I felt lost, disappointed and my faith began to waver. I started getting help through grief support and had lots of people around me to love, help and support me. I went through compassion fatigue and burnout and wasn’t sure what was next. After a while I decided to enter back into college for Organizational Development (MSOD) and obtained a Strategic Human Resources Certification. While in school I was facing many stressor and began to struggle with mental health. At this point I was a single mom of three and was juggling career, school and just life in general but I persevered. Through that struggle was the birth place of Beyond the Mosaic LLC which was an entrepreneurship venture. Beyond the Mosaic began as a coaching and consulting business to help others through coaching, personal and professional development strategy, training and workshops. Beyond the Mosaic exists to create a sounding board and space for people who have collected pieces from their journey and now want to put them back together in an effort to move forward…
– Beyond the doubt… into capabilities
– Beyond existing… into fulfillment
– Beyond avoidance… into purpose
Beyond the Mosaic operates from the perspective of honor, wellness, resilience, and vision. We help you identify your goals and support you to reach those through encouragement and accountability.
As I was building my business I worked briefly as a parent educator and knew that I wanted to be strategic about helping familes reach their goals and pour into overall wellness.

After COVID I began to do some internal work about the direction of my life, business and career. When I would facilitate workshops people often would say it felt therapeutic. So I began to pray and ask God for direction. Well as the journey continues I am now in school for counseling in the Marriage, Couple & Family program through Mid America Nazarene. I am continually being stretched and growing. I believe that I am on target in the direction of healing and wholeness work with individuals and families. Even with the challenges that arise I am so grateful for this cultivation and anticipating the journey forward.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not a smooth road at all. Let’s say a winding bumpy road with many forks in the road that would lead to more bumps. There were moments of smooth roads but definitely not constant. Some of my struggles consisted of lack of motivation, there were times I just wanted to quit everything. I struggled with compassion fatigue and burnout. I struggled with anxiety, panic attacks and depression. I also struggled with financial difficulties and uncertainty through moments in life but particularly when I started entrepreneurship. Life challenges of raising children and trying to start over in relationships. I have a laundry list of stories for your entertainment. What I will say is endurance through the struggle builds character. Through it all I’ve prayed for guidance (even if I didn’t/don’t always listen) but my faith, prayers and the prayers of others have continually pulled me through.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Currently I work as a consultant and independent contractor. I am contracted as a employee enrichment specialist, an HR recruitment consultant, a professional development training facilitator and facilitate workshops that I created: SWOT Your Life (reflective goal oriented worshop(, The EWE Experience (spiritual/faith growth workshop) and CORE Work (reflective spiritual/faith growth workshop). Each of these workshops promote introspection/self awareness and tangible accountability to reach goals or at least get started.

I think I am most pleased with my ability to connect with others and their willingness to trust me with vulnerable parts of themselves. I consider it an honor and a privilege when someone can be transparent with me. Connecting with people on a genuine, relatable and authentic level is a skill that I have been blessed to have. I have been able to come to tables of strangers and leave knowing their life story which always amazes me.

How do you think about happiness?
Spending time with family and friends makes me happy. I enjoy genuine connection, lots of laughs and tender moments. I love being outside it fills my cup. I love spending time with my children, they bring me lots of joy.

In my career it makes me happy when people have epiphany moments and are able to grow more beyond what they thought possible.

Seeing others thrive makes me happy because that indicates that they are finding meaning and purpose.

And ultimately, I am happy when I get to share my journey of faith and the love of God with others. I live it everyday as best I can. Even when I stumble my faith and belief is still part of who I am to my core.
