Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordyn Hall.
Hi Jordyn, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started Paper+Petal Design in 2017 in Colorado Springs, CO. At the time, we were living on an Air Force base and I was a stay at home mom trying to juggle toddlers and military life. The time came to decorate my daughters’ rooms and because we were in base housing, that meant no painting. I had to get creative to make their space special. That is when I first started experimenting with large paper flowers after browsing Pinterest for hours.
After doing them for my daughters room, I started practicing more and making them for friends and it just started taking off from there. I made them for nurseries, living rooms, salons, bridal shops, etc. After a while, I wanted to expand so I started with cake and cupcake toppers and opened my Etsy shop. Recently, since moving to Overland Park, I have incorporated both personalized and seasonal wooden signs. I am always excited to design something new so I am sure more items will be added as my shop continues to grow.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been all rainbows and butterflies (although you may assume so from all the bright and whimsical designs!). The biggest obstacle I have had is reopening my shop when we moved to Overland Park. I had such a great customer base in Colorado and really felt connected to the people and their businesses. Having to take off a few months to get settled into a new home and area was a hit to my business. It took months to rebuild the views to my Etsy shop and I am still trying to find my way in the KC small business world. With that being said, I have met so many amazing small business owners in town and have really enjoyed getting to know customers so I’m looking forward to what the future entails! There will always be bumps in the road but that is where the real growth happens.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I have always been creative but never imagined I would be able to use it to open my own shop. I actually have a bachelor’s in dental hygiene but stopped practicing when I had kids and were moving constantly with the Air Force. I love creating kid’s room and party decor because it gives me an opportunity to work with bright colors and sparkles–something that isn’t necessarily present throughout my home except for my girls’ rooms. I absolutely love making an item for a nursery or for a child’s first birthday. There is something so special about those moments and I am so honored to be a small part of it.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Make sure you are creating something that brings you joy and always be open to change. It can be challenging to stay inspired at times when you rely on your creativity for new ideas and products. Sometimes I find it refreshing to make something for my home and take a break from making to sell.
This usually will break my creativity block and I’m back to business the next day! There are always new trends, customers who want something a tad different than what is shown, so I have learned to stay flexible and open to change. I always want my customers to feel like they are talking to a friend when discussing an order-this is how you get repeat customers which is one of the best compliments you can get as a small business owner.
