Rising Stars: Meet Jason Brazzel of Kansas City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Brazzel.

Hi Jason, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started my career while still in the Marine Corps. My family and I had started with cookouts and parties. They have always been my biggest support. We were stationed in Germany and had the opportunity operate the neighborhood restaurant. Once my tour was over, we moved to Missouri and started my business Goldie Mae’s Soul Food Kitchen & BBQ.
We moved to Kansas City after I retired in 2018. I went to culinary school at Escoffier school of culinary arts and graduated with my associate degree in Culinary Arts in 2021. I went back to school and got my second associate degree in Holistic wellness and nutrition.
I entered this business with the same passion that was instilled in me from my family in Memphis, Tn.
The leadership skills that I learned in the Marine Corps, truly show the high standards in discipline and execution in creating master culinary moments. Also, the moments that I get to lead my team on major events. Starting from catering to private chef events all started at a backyard BBQ.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been easy. It has been challenging financially at times and the numerous permits for different cities in the state. In Missouri, Food trucks and culinary establishments have to have multiple business permits to operate. Those permits addd up in cost that can limit opportunity in multiple areas.
I had to learn to budget for permits yearly now and account for that expense. 5 different cities and counties with different requirements can be difficult to navigate. For funding, I turned to local help from the economic development council. They helped me with applying with the SBA. So I think that knowing your location and the requirements are a must. Do your research.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m the executive chef of Goldie Mae’s Soul Food Kitchen & BBQ. I specialize in Southern American cuisine (soul food/southern comfort food). We are know for our BBQ and deserts. Our signature dish is the Smoked Chicken Lollipop. They are the crowd favorite.
I’m very proud what I have accomplished to get here to this point. All of the education, all of the catering orders and all of the hard work in the kitchen, is what makes me who I am as a chef. I believe that my honesty and relationship building skills set me apart from others in this area. I really strive to make your culinary experience with us the best that you have ever tasted and experienced ever. I want you to feel like you are eating a taste of home. I believe that treating you as family brings more families together at the table.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
The quality that has been most important to my success has been consistency. I bring the same top shelf experience in any catering order or event. The taste is a consistent high quality taste. The service is top tier. Keeping every order or event at the highest level, no matter the size.
