Today we’d like to introduce you to David G Scott.
Hi David, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started performing stand-up comedy after I retired. It’s more accurate to say I started after my wife, who had Alzheimer’s, entered a nursing home. My son, Robert, had begun appearing at an open mic – a forum for multiple comedians to get behind a mic for five minutes each. He invited me to join him one evening, so I performed and never stopped. The following year, I organized the first Alzheimer’s Fundraiser/Comedy Show. In subsequent years, I invited other local (far more accomplished) comedians – Mike Saccone and Dave Kious- to perform. They also had a family member affected by the disease. We raised money and had fun doing it! My comedy career experienced slow but steady growth. I created a comedy CD (Let Me Give You a F’rinstance), a comedy book (Closed For Repairs With Plumbing Problems), and a comedy website (davidgscottcleancomedy.com). I’ve performed at over 50 nursing homes and retirement centers in the Kansas City area. They’re what I call my “target demographic.” I have been very fortunate to be a member of The Veterans of Comedy (TVOC), a comedy troupe created by Will “WillC” Clifton. TVOC is a nationwide group of veterans who perform primarily at veterans organizations, e.g., VFW halls and American Legion posts.
Most recently, we performed at the Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic in Snowmass, Colorado – a wonderful and inspiring event. Because of my background in teaching, I specialize in clean comedy. I can find humor in ordinary things. Let me give you a f’rinstance: F’rinstance, there’s a stop sign in the parking lot of my local car dealership. Below it is another sign that says, “Heavy Pedestrian Traffic.” I had the thought: That’s an insult to skinny pedestrians. What do I do if I see a skinny one? Speed up and try to hit them? Do I get extra points because they’re skittish?
Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
COVID didn’t help my stand-up career, although I did perform multiple times online using Zoom. I also took advantage of the time to compile my one-liners, jokes, humorous screenplays, and comedy bits into the book, Closed For Repairs With Plumbing Problems. The book is available from my website https://davidgscottcleancomedy.com/. Kansas City is a hotbed of comedic talent. Early on, I would get jealous of the success of other, younger comedians. Any more, I’m happy for them. I’ve accepted that only some people want to hear clean comedy! My strong suits are nursing homes, retirement centers, comedy clubs, and veterans organizations – not bars and nightclubs. Fortunately, there are a lot of great comedy venues in town, for example, The Comedy Club of Kansas City, the Improv, The Bird Comedy Theater, the RINO, and the Gospel Lounge.
Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am known for being a clean comedian, which sets me apart from almost every other stand-up comedian in Kansas City. Only a handful of local comedians are hilarious and don’t do “blue” humor, most notably Rod Reyes, Jerad Langley, and Brice Stanley. I am proud of my CD (Let me give you a F’rinstance) and my collection of humorous writings (Closed For Repairs With Plumbing Problems). I am also proud of my performance at the 2022 Kansas City Fringe Festival, where I performed five one-person shows in eight days. The reviews were very complimentary. To see some of those reviews, visit my website https://davidgscottcleancomedy.com/.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Richard Montano greeted me warmly at my first open mic and immediately made me feel part of the comedy community. Later, he invited me to perform on his radio show, These Two Idiots. Thank you, Richard!
Will “Will C” Clifton generously invited me to be part of The Veterans Of Comedy. I was glad to travel with him all over the Midwest, performing at VFW and American Legion posts. He was and continues to be a wonderful comedy mentor. Thank you, Will!
Rod Reyes also invited me to travel with him and shared several tips from his vast warehouse of comedy experiences. Thank you, Rod!
Dave Kious has invited me to perform multiple times on his radio show on 97.7 The Dawg. He has always taken the time to promote both my book and my website. Plus, we have a great time! The entire Kansas City comedy community has been very supportive over the years. I will always be grateful to those who held local competitions or invited me to perform at one of their shows. Thank you all!
