Rising Stars: Meet DaGuyInBlack of Kansas City

Today we’d like to introduce you to DaGuyInBlack.

Hi DaGuyInBlack, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I got started recording music 8 years ago. I started to get serious about my brand 5 years ago.

Its been alot of fun figuring out what i like and how i’d like to put it together! I always knew i wanted to make something different. That was certain, though some things have changed.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been smooth sailing for my art. I moved across the country in 2023. Some of my toughest battles were in my own head. It really depleted my drive to create and ideas flowing, I felt scattered.

This year (2026) i bought a used motorcycle, it’s helped me so much mentally. We all want to feel freedom, thats tough when you feel trapped in a way of thinking and feeling.

Journaling daily and writing letters have also been a big part of my recovery. I’ve been sober almost a year now and i feel like the truest version of myself.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I have been formulating a style over the past 8 years that i enjoy to make and listen to. Sometimes it can be tough to get both of those to line up haha!

In the past I used loops in Garageband to put together Electronic Hip Hop tracks to rhyme on. Sometimes with a bit of Country/Folk and/or Heavy Metal sprinkled in.

In this new season of growth, i’m working with physical instruments to record. It’s alot more time consuming but the personal satisfaction has multiplied.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Most def, my most recent music video “HARVEST” was a bit of a risk for me. Now as i look back, i dont see it as such. I see it as the art i originally intended it to be!

The times of Instagram and YouTube fame were red hot around and shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic. Alot of artists were focusing more on how they looked on the ForYou feed of social media accounts.

What was wild as the algorithms grew, people started to reach audiences across the globe with social media more frequently. Adding fuel to the fire for hungry artists looking to catch a big break.

I invested a decent amount of money into my “HARVEST” music video and for awhile regretted it. I regretted not putting the time in to properly market it and my other music videos. Then again, the “proper” ideal marketing on social media can take fun out of what you do if you aren’t careful. You have to find what works for you while not tearing out the fun in it all!
