Today we’d like to introduce you to Christian Dixon.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up in a Christian household, going to church every week and singing in the church band. I appreciated music as a means to tell meaningful stories and grapple with deeper themes of identity. Much of contemporary Christian music was focused on positivity and repetitive messaging, and it didn’t engage me on a very deep level. I was intrigued by alternative artists like Switchfoot and their ability to address heavy topics like inequality, greed, doubt, and community while still maintaining an element of faith in their messaging.
I have used songwriting as a metric for self-reflection, because at times the songs share things I couldn’t otherwise articulate. I often write to process the loss of friendships and relationships, conceptualize mental health, and develop a nuanced identity of faith and doubt, because these are emergent themes in my life that have been impactful. I am emboldened to share these stories through song because I’ve found the messages resonate with others as well.
For many years, I was content with wishful thinking and seeing music as a fun “what if.” I didn’t believe I had the ability or resources to make much of an impact. Toward the end of 2023, I finally worked up the courage to attend an open mic at the PH Coffee House in Pendleton Heights, hosted by the Heartland Song Network. It took me some time to build confidence in sharing my original music, but in 2024, the unwavering support of my friends and the welcoming spirit of other artists helped to build a comfortable environment. I realized I thoroughly enjoyed sharing my music and connecting with others over the emotions that the songs brought out.
In 2025, I committed to expanding my horizons in the music community of Kansas City. I sought out new venues and fellow independent musicians, and I recognized the importance of fostering relationships with others. I am excited to see what 2026 and beyond has in store for my music!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road always appears smoother in the rear view mirror, but in the moment, sometimes it feels like there isn’t even a road to follow. I have a lot of enthusiasm and eagerness to advocate for myself, but sometimes I don’t even know where to begin. Whether that is recording and releasing music, inquiring about a performance at a venue, creating content for social media, or just building a relationship with someone, the process can be overwhelming to the point of discouragement.
I have struggled with anxiety and low self-esteem from a young age, and this combination has often hindered me from chasing after what I want most. There’s a fear of the unknown and a lack of belief in my own ability. Choosing to take action in spite of these challenges takes a lot of courage. Changing the narrative of “Who am I to chase this dream?” to “Why not me?” has helped me to push the boundaries of discomfort.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an independent musician, particularly a singer-songwriter. My songs explore themes of faith and doubt, love and loss, fulfillment and want, and an overall search for meaning. My goal is to produce authentic music for authentic people through songs that evoke strong emotions and encourage listeners to reflect.
I see vulnerability in my music as an essential component to my sound and my storytelling. I’m not afraid to share a song that reflects my discontent, frustrations, or struggles, because I know I’m not the only person going through these things.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
The music industry as a whole is challenging for me to predict as an independent artist. The use of artificial intelligence is a concern in the world of creativity and art as a whole.
I haven’t been engaged in the independent music scene long enough to have an informed opinion on audience tastes, venue expectations, and things of that nature. However, I hope that niche communities can emerge and homogenize so that smaller artists can thrive and find their audience.
