Today we’d like to introduce you to Calvin Thompson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up in Wyandotte County and attended Wyandotte High School. I played basketball and was voted the best player in Kansas in 1982 and then went on to play for Ted Owens and Larry Brown a the University of Kansas. Drafted by the New York Knicks of the NBA and played two seasons in the CBA before venturing overseas to continue my playing career. I played two years in a professional league in France and 5 in Israel before retiring to start up my youth program HOOP (Hellping Out Other People) Service.
Currently at my alma mater working on my 20 and Counting project. www.t20p-dogs.com
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Simply getting people to respond in a timely manner and then complaining when they don’t see something they like or assume something without reading.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Here at Wyandotte, I am basically the assistant to all of the principals in helping them in whatever capacity needed. My title is Facilitor of Mentoring. I spend a lot of time dealing with the most at-risk kids and try to steer them in the right direction.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Simply working hard to achieve my goal of becoming the first in my family to go to college. I did so by earnig a basketball scholarship to play for KU.
