Today we’d like to introduce you to Bria Hughes.
Hi Bria; it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
My journey started from my love of horror and using Special Effects Makeup as a coping technique through tough times. That quickly turned into me using Elmer’s glue and ketchup for wounds, watching the stuff people typically look away from; that’s when I knew this was the correct path for me. Over time, I began building content and investing in myself, working through Halloween and finding the community. My skills would thrive in. That’s when I was part of Worlds of Fun Haunt, currently in my 4th year, and I found a more profound love for the chaos. 2023 has been my biggest year of growth since quitting my 9-5 and taking a leap of faith. I now have a higher skillset, new opportunities, and a new respect for Special Effects Makeup’s importance! I now am a traveling artist from KC to NYC, having taken classes by the best in the SFX industry, worked many music videos, including Strange Music, and worked on a major Horror Film in Jersey, as well as walking my first NYFW runway show exploring my modeling career. I am becoming a full-time content creator and doing SFX year-round!
Please talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned. Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth journey as a single mother of 2 currently building a home and having a rare career path here in Kansas City. With that said, as a mother, I pick my brushes up any chance I get, no matter how exhausted or broken I am. I let anything hold me back. I knew what I wanted and the only way to get it, so I got it done. I have an amazing support system and a burning love for what I do, and I’ve only ever grown in the industry by following the plan. No matter how hard it gets, I know I can do anything!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Special Effects Artist, Makeup Artist, and Model, and I do Production assistance/Prop work occasionally. I specialize in Special Effects makeup, specifically silicone prosthetic making and application, wound work, gore looks, Halloween makeup, face paint, TV and film makeup, and blood gags for films. I’m known for being the GOREQUEEN being known for my realism work, gruesome makeup looks, and all things that make you cringe! I’m most proud of my persistence and never giving up, staying consistent, and seeing results in mind-blowing opportunities and accomplishments. What truly separates me from others is my love for what I do; there are a lot of artists in this world, but I will go to any length to get my work where it deserves to be, bring my skillset where it needs to be, and make sure I do everything I’ve ever wanted to do!
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the COVID-19 crisis?
The main lesson I learned from the pandemic is to be safe and sanitary, and if there is something you can’t do for any incontrollable reasons, find something else to do that will benefit your skills, business, and mindset. Never slip out of the habit of what you love!
