Today we’d like to introduce you to Brad Glenn.
Hi Brad, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Distinguished Roots Massage started as an idea on a green spiral notebook page. At the time, I was a special education teacher in Springfield, Illinois whose only real relief from life came from working out.
Like all teachers, I was constantly stressed with all of the planning and paperwork that come with the position, but when I was able to move, all the stress melted away. Then one day, I overdid it in the gym and I was having a lot of shoulder and back pain.
My girlfriend (now wife) at the time, who lived in Kansas City, told me to make an appointment with a massage therapist for a deep tissue massage. At that appointment, the massage therapist was able to unlock my neck, shoulder, and chest giving me immediate relief.
I stayed for some time after the appointment to pick his brain on how he got to where he was in his career. Following that encounter, I went back to Springfield and wrote out a plan on a green spiral notebook page that would change my life. A short time after that I moved to Kansas City and started the transition into massage therapy.
During this time, I was still a full-time teacher by day and attending massage classes at night. Unfortunately, Covid hit, but I pressed through as safely as I could to finish the program as fast as possible. As I was nearing the end of my studies, I established Distinguished Roots Massage in hopes that one day the world would get back to normal and I could get out on my own.
Once I got my license, I started working at a corporate chain along with doing side work for myself. I mimicked all of the techniques that were used on me in that first deep tissue massage from memory. People loved it. So I booked another massage with the same massage therapist that started all of this to say thank you for the pointers and talk more shop.
Following this conversation, we became close friends–so close that we, along with another one of my massage classmates, opened up an office together.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
My road has not been smooth, but it could have been a lot worse.
I had more stress than problems. I was stressed with moving away from my home state. I was stressed working and attending classes 12-15 hours a day. I stressed trying to pass my license test. I was very stressed dealing with the real estate process to secure my business space. Other than those all my needs in life were secure.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Distinguished Roots Massage, LLC is a licensed start-up company founded in May 2019. My goal is to improve and sustain the mobility of my clients through the use of deep tissue massage and other manual therapy techniques. My clientele is mainly the athletic community, but individuals from all walks of life are welcome.
I offer massages in time slots of 30, 60, and 90-minute sessions geared toward each client’s specific needs. Sessions can consist of (but are not limited to): Deep Tissue Massage, Soft Tissue Blading, Cupping, Trigger Point Therapy, Hot Stones, Body Tempering, and more. I am known for my trigger point work. “It hurts so good” is what I’m told. Also, Body Tempering is really catching on as well.
I think that the Body Tempering along with the amount of education you will receive about your body during one of my sessions sets me apart. I’m not interested in booking you for as many sessions as possible. I want to fix your disfunction and improve your quality of life.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was (and still am) a sports junkie.
If there was a sport being played I wanted to know all about it as fast as possible. I had a big personality, I spoke to everyone and was often off-topic in class because of it, but I was bright. I was in the drama club, on the debate team, on the Model UN team, sang in the choir, and played in the pep band.
Those activities went along with being on the football and volleyball teams too.
