Today we’d like to introduce you to Bobby Coberley.
Hi Bobby, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It started out as a hobby. I enjoyed building things and learning the different species of wood. I started making pens, rings, bottle stoppers, signs, and cutting boards. I would go to craft fairs and sell my items. Then one day I found out the hard way that the company I worked for full-time was downsizing. I was affected by the changes. My wife told me that if there was a time to turn my hobby into a business, it was then. I decided to go bigger with my projects and started doing accent walls, custom-sized cabinets and media centers. I started loving what I do all over again.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’m a pretty shy person. Putting myself out there was a challenge. I went to a networking event to try getting out of my shell. Soon after, most of my work came from word of mouth. I also use social media to “advertise”. I’m slowly coming around. Time will improve that.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I really enjoy the creative/artistic aspect of what I do. More times than not, I get a customer who knows what they generally want. However, they don’t know how they want the actual design to look. That’s when I get my creative juices flowing and give them a couple of options that are bouncing around in my head. It usually works out pretty well!
How do you think about luck?
I’m a firm believer that things happen for a reason. If things happen in a positive way, I chalk that up to good luck. If something occurs that I consider bad luck, then it needs to be tweaked. That should point me in the right direction.
