Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Anderson.
Alex, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I studied graphic design at the University of Kansas. After college my first job was at a small branding studio called Willoughby Design. I learned a ton and got to do a ton of work designing for local clients including the KC Streetcar and Ride KC. After Willoughby I wanted a change of pace and decided to go out on my own to freelance. Around that time I also started teaching Visual Communication at the University of Kansas. I continue to teach and run my own design practice working with both national and local clients including Wired Magazine, Kansas City Chiefs, and Hank’s Garage & Grill.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Certainly hasn’t always been smooth! Lots of late nights and long days.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My practice focuses on brand identity but also encompasses designing posters, illustration, and anything else I find interesting to work on. The work I am most proud of is the work I do for local small businesses. I believe that every business can benefit from strong confident branding that allows the business to shine through. I think what sets me apart is my ability to combine illustration and design into brand identity systems that go beyond just a logo. I also think keeping my operation small and hiring the right partners when I need them allows me to work with clients of all sizes.
