We’re looking forward to introducing you to Rachael Baker. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Rachael, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
Over the past two years, I’ve been exploring stepping into the education space. I’ve had the opportunity to mentor a few emerging photographers eager to break into weddings and portraits. At first, I was hesitant, but the experience has been incredibly rewarding. I love giving back to my community and supporting another creative’s journey. When I started photography, I struggled to find mentorship, and I know how much of an impact guidance can have on a career. Now, I’m excited to launch an educational program specifically designed for photographers entering the wedding industry. My passion is helping young entrepreneurs fast-track their journey, skip the confusion, and build a strong foundation from the start.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Meet Rachael Baker – Founder of RW Photography
Hi, I’m Rachael, the owner and creative force behind RW Photography, proudly based in Kansas City, Missouri. I specialize in blending documentary-style authenticity with a refined editorial touch to create an elevated yet deeply personal wedding photography experience. Whether capturing love stories in Kansas City or traveling across the globe, my goal is always the same: to document your day in a way that feels honest, emotional, and uniquely yours.
What sets RW Photography apart is the thoughtful balance in our approach and the ability to make couples feel completely at ease in front of the camera. While posed portraits have their place, the true magic lies in the in-between moments—the genuine laughs, quiet glances, and unscripted joy. Our clients often describe our work as organic, heartfelt, and true to the spirit of their relationship, which is exactly what we strive to deliver every time.
Beyond photography, I’m deeply passionate about community and growth. Over the past two years, I’ve had the opportunity to mentor emerging photographers eager to enter the wedding and portrait space. What started as a curiosity quickly turned into a calling, and I’m now preparing to launch an educational program designed for photographers who are ready to confidently step into the wedding industry. Enrollment will be opening here soon and I couldn’t be more excited.
Right now, my focus is on continuing to serve my amazing wedding clients while evolving the RW Photography brand and bringing this educational project to life. I’m constantly refining the client experience to connect with couples who align with my style and energy. On the education side, I’m building a hands-on, supportive program for creatives ready to find their voice, sharpen their craft, and approach weddings with both intention and heart.
Thank you for the opportunity to share my journey and what’s on the horizon. I’m so grateful for the love and support of this community and can’t wait for what’s next.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
The person who taught me the most about work was my dad. From an early age, he showed me what it means to be a hard worker and helped build the foundation for the perseverance I carry as a business owner today. No matter how he felt, he put on his boots and went to work each day, and no matter how tired he was when he returned home, he made time to support my mom and spend time with me. He led by example—demonstrating dedication, discipline, and excellence in everything he did. Watching him shaped my drive, helping me earn an athletic scholarship in college and instilling the determination to start and grow my own business.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, there have been several times in my journey where I felt like giving up. I started my photography business in 2020, which was already a challenging time in the world. Finding mentors was difficult, and reaching out often felt intimidating. I had to contact dozens of photographers before receiving a few encouraging messages. Getting started was overwhelming because I was learning both the photography and business sides at once, and it took almost a year to start making money after paying off my gear. Early client meetings often ended in rejection, and I struggled to find the right verbiage and processes to grow my business.
About a year and a half in, I fell into the trap of comparing myself to others. I began doubting my skills and even felt embarrassed to promote my work, which almost derailed my business completely. On top of that, overworking and burnout as a creative made it easy to question my craft.
What helped me push through was a combination of persistence, structure, and remembering lessons from my dad—he showed me the value of hard work and never giving up. I also learned to prioritize my health and balance, which allowed me to navigate the difficult moments with more grace. Today, pursuing and growing my business is my passion, and quitting is simply not an option. These experiences are also why I’m so passionate about mentoring others, because I know firsthand how much support can change someone’s journey.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
I think the biggest lie the wedding photography industry tells itself is that success comes overnight or that talent alone is enough. Many photographers believe that if they’re skilled with a camera, clients and opportunities will automatically follow. This is ideology I fell into at the very start of my journey – I genuinely thought this craft was going to be “easy.” The reality is that building a sustainable business requires more than photography skills, it’s about marketing, client experience, pricing strategy, networking, and consistent effort on top of the expectation to excel creatively. There are many hats you must wear as a creative entrepreneur. Ignoring these aspects often leads to frustration, burnout, and self-doubt. The truth is, success in this industry comes from combining creativity with strategy, persistence, and a willingness to learn from both mistakes and mentors.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I am definitely doing what I was born to do. Growing up, I was always drawn to photography, though I never imagined I would one day own a photography business. It started as a personal hobby taking photos on my phone of landscapes, flowers, friends, documenting my life. After high school, I went to college to play softball and pursue a business degree, which was a great experience, but I quickly realized it wasn’t what I truly wanted. After my first year, I returned home to complete my associate’s degree at a local college. While my parents would have preferred that I earn a bachelor’s, I chose to focus on building my business instead. I wasn’t passionate about traditional school, but I knew I wanted to own a business—and even five years ago, I could see that independent learning and hands-on experience would allow me to make that dream a reality.
