Paytience Markle of Midtown on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Paytience Markle shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Paytience, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Lately I have been working on doing paint-by-number’s and that has been bringing me a lot of joy. I have finished a couple of them and have a few that I have in rotation that I am working on when I have time. They bring me a lot of joy and relaxation.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi! My name is Paytience, the owner of Paytience Rose Studio, a photography business in Kansas City, MO. I specialize in all types of portraits such as individual portraits, couples photos, maternity, family photos, boudoir, and much more. I love working on creative projects and bringing ideas alive. I think what sets my photography apart is the deep, rich colors I’m able to bring out in my photos, and I’ve also been told that I really capture the soul of my clients.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
When I was younger, probably around high school age, I was really discouraged from using art as a means of income. I believed that I had to find a normal 9 to 5 job in order to fit in and make it in life. While I am still working a regular job part time, I no longer believe that being a working artist is a pipe dream. I have been afraid to chase my dreams for a long time, but I have started pursuing them more and more and believe they are obtainable.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Of course. In particular, there was the year I decided to pursue wedding photography really hard. First, of all I wasn’t enjoying it and I got really burnt out. I was exhausted and so busy on top of working full time. What really broke me was a couple of brides that were really unhappy with the worked that I delivered. I have a hard time navigating constructive criticism, and felt really defeated. I will be honest, I took a significant break from my business to regroup. When I came back to my business, I decided to focus less on weddings and more on the things that I enjoy photographing. So far, that has been a great learning lesson and I’m thankful for the experience. I’m also glad that I haven’t given up yet!

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
I don’t think anyone can say that the public or social media version of themselves is their real selves. We like to think that we are open and vulnerable and put everything out there, but we hold back or put only the best versions of ourselves unintentionally whether we realize it or not. I think also with having a business, there is a certain reputation to uphold. Vulnerability is so important even for a business, but I think there is a certain level that is professional or not.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
There isn’t necessarily a specific story that I hope people tell, but I hope that people say that I was kind and selfless and cared about everyone. I think we can struggle with selfishness sometimes in this culture, and I know I do as well, so I hope that I have worked on it enough that people would say those things about me.
