Meet Young Harry Brown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Young Harry Brown.

Young Harry Brown

Hi Young, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I was born in Arkansas, moved to Texas before I was 1 & went to high school in Kansas. My dad is from Memphis, Tennessee, and my mom, Bradenton, Florida. The only reason I mention this is to show that my family is from all over the place. I had a hard time making friends because we moved so much. I think it’s caused me to have a very interesting view on things because I never had a core group of friends. I’ve been writing rap music since elementary school. I would listen to the radio and write until like 3 am. I grew up in a religious household. I learned a lot of melodies from just singing during church services. Music was never a big thing with my parents. I was never a big fan of school. Learned differently than the majority, and it was frustrating. I went to junior college on a football scholarship and met my now producer, WitDaLeft! We made a couple of songs in college and linked up again when I decided to leave my 4-year-old. I didn’t start taking it serious until then, so I’m a late bloomer. Since then, we’ve released a lot of music and are still going strong. I moved to KC to build on what we are doing.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Nothing is ever a smooth road. I struggled with depression in my early 20s. It took me a while to deal with some childhood trauma. I was also bullied pretty severely in elementary and middle school. The music business is not what a lot of people think. I’ve had shows fall thru, people scam me and run off, and dealt with a lot of broken promises.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I make rap music. I’m a real fan of the genre. I can do anything from melodic, trap, boombap, etc. What I’m proud of the most is that I’m extremely honest in my music and able to convey it in a way that is relatable and dope. I think that is what also sets me apart from other artists. What also sets me apart is the creativity in the lyrics. It is something that is truly unique and when people listen, they can tell instantly. Somebody once told me, “You wake up and just rap about your life; other people go out and do things just to talk about it.” That has always stuck with me, and I take pride in that. I don’t ever want to mislead or create a false persona.

My proudest work is an EP I released recently called ‘For Your Consideration.’

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
I would say, don’t be afraid to be yourself. That is what separates people in an oversaturated market. ALSO, everybody will have opinions on your vision. I wouldn’t pay attention to what others are saying unless it’s beneficial to what you’re trying to do
