Today we’d like to introduce you to Whitney Mathis.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have always had a love for baking and anything artsy, but it wasn’t until my daughter’s 1st birthday (13 years ago!) that I realized I could combine the two and turn cake into works of art. I started diving into the cake artist world by way of YouTube videos and Pinterest finds and have been hooked ever since! I use social media as my main platform of advertising as well as word of mouth and over a decade later I have made some really fun and challenging cakes. I have families that use me for every birthday for their kids, wedding cakes that later became baby shower cakes, and even cakes for some World Series Royals players!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road! From Covid providing challenges in the way people threw parties and weddings (or decided not to at all) and recently the prices of groceries and gas being the highest I’ve experienced, I’ve had to really get creative and be patient with some of the slower seasons. It taught me to be more selective in the orders I take on and allows me be able to put more work into the artistry that I love.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I make custom cakes. I don’t consider myself a “traditional baker”, but more of a cake artist. I’m known for super tall cakes and being able to incorporate crazy themes and turning cake into very realistic things similar to what you’d see on Netflix’s Is it Cake?? I get asked that question a lot! I’m most proud of being able to continue learning new skills and improving on the basic skills needed for cake decorating. I think my number of return/happy customers and being a one-woman-show sets me apart and brings a very personal touch to everything I create. All of my cakes have a lot of love and time poured into them, along with years of knowledge and experience.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I have to give credit to my kids! They are the reason I decided to take this on in the first place, and they are so supportive and love to help me out when they can. They like being part of the delivery process and seeing the reactions the cakes get when they are set up at parties and weddings. The rest of the credit goes to the customers. I have a really really loyal fan base and without them ordering year after year I wouldn’t be here at all!
