Today we’d like to introduce you to Theodora Parsons.
Hi Theodora, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always loved fragrance, as a child I would make ‘perfumes’ using whatever I thought smelled nice around the house.
Fast forward to me as an adult being obsessed with candles, perfumes and anything that had scent. I am also a cinephile and I quickly noticed I began watching films in a different way. Certain scenes, characters, music had an extreme effect on me and I started questioning what that character smelled like, what I felt when I saw that film. The two became intertwined, eventually this spread to books and other media. Anything that moved me to build a world beyond sight and emotion into a fragrance.
Hex Mundi started as a candle company, my first scent was Chinatown named after one of my favorite films. The notes were jasmine tea, gunsmoke and salty ocean air. After making candles for about 5ish years and expanding my catalog I realized that I would love to smell like these fragrances. Thus my candle company became a tiny perfume house.
I currently have over 100 perfumes in my catalog and I am ever expanding. I also offer custom fragrance services that have taken off beautifully.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
For the most part the journey has been smooth. I still have a hard time when reviews of things I’ve created aren’t great but you can’t please everyone.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I pride myself in my ability to make a fragrance that highlights every note I give. As a consumer I find it frustrating to purchase a fragrance that says it should smell of one thing and it’s a muddled mess. So being able to showcase each note is vastly important to me.
I’ve been doing a number of collaborations and customs that I have really enjoyed. It started with making candles and soaps for Dear You Tattoo. Since then I’ve collaborated with author Cassandra Khaw, musician Jonathan Bates of Big Black Delta and I’ve made a custom fragrance for a local bookstore called Turnsol. I would love to do more things like this, the possibilities are endless!
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I think people are a little surprised by my catalog. The size is staggering so I do try to help people find something expressly for them by going off of notes they enjoy.
