Meet Ana and Sophia of The Black Mariah Theater

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ana and Sophia.

Hi Ana and Sophia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Hi! We’re Ana and Sophia. Twin sisters who grew up playing music together. We’ve been playing live shows as our band, The Black Mariah Theater, for the past eight years, and try to play live as much as possible! We released our first EP “Black Hearts” in 2017, and our new record “Patron Saint” in 2020 (right before the pandemic hit). We spent our time during the apocalypse to do some home-recording, and just put out an EP of acoustic cover songs on Spotify!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Well, obviously the past year has been difficult for everyone. We released our record “Patron Saint” in February of 2020 and had a tour planned after that, which was obviously canceled. To kind of make-up for that, we did a lot of live videos, music videos, and live stream concerts online to keep some sort of momentum happening for our music.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We’re in a band together. Our sound gets described differently by different people, but we’ve settled on calling ourselves jazz/punk or sparkly witch-rock. We’re known for being a twin-sister duo and for our unique fashion. I’d say we’re most proud of “Patron Saint,” our first full-length record, and also the first songs we collaborated on with songwriting. Also the first time our drummer (Analiese) sang on a recording!

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Our drive and persistence to play music– we do everything ourselves. Since we’re an unsigned self-managed band, we write all our own songs, we book all our tours and local gigs, and we design all our merch and promotional materials. If there’s a show we want to be a part of, we ask about it. The worst they can do is say no.
