Today we’d like to introduce you to Tenesia Brown.
Hi Tenesia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started my journey in real estate at 18, that’s when I bought my first house. I became a real estate broker at 22 and opened Sanders Realty. One of my older sisters is the driving force behind it actually, she told me to get my real estate license because that’s what she did in Atlanta… so I did. Then I turned around and obtained my broker’s license. Then she told me to begin investing in real estate, so I did that too and the rest is history or shall I say Her-story! I’ve been a real estate broker now nearly 18 years but in 2017 is when I really figured out my purpose…to help black people in the Urban Core become homeowners.
I moved to the urban core, opened an office dead smack in the heart of the core and changed the name of my company to Keys Realty Group Inc. I set on a mission to do my part in my making the city better. We have record number killings that year and I felt one of the problems is because neighbors didn’t talk or report… one of those reason were because the residents moved in and out because they were just renters. In 2017, I did the first annual KRG Community Thanksgiving Dinner because I wanted people to get to know their neighbors. And it did just that, it got people to sit next to one another and talk. When one man stood up and said, “I don’t know who did this but thank you, I needed it. It feels like love!” I knew that I would continue to do it and I’ve done one every year except for 2020 due to the pandemic.
But that is just one of the numerous things that KRG does to give back and get out in the community. We are truly a community real estate brokerage that focuses on bringing resources and education to the Urban Core, although we work with everyone anywhere our foundation is serving the underserved communities and ensuring that we are doing our part to help bridge the homeownership gap in the black and brown communities.
Some of the things that we do are as follows: KRG Community Thanksgiving Dinner, Cold Weather Drive where we give coats, hats, scarfs and gloves to the homeless teen shelter and the pregnancy shelters, School Supplies and Backpack give a ways to middle and high school students, Realtor Happy Hours, numerous educational seminars throughout the year. Walk-In Wednesdays and our biggest event the Bi-Annual tour called The Kansas City Homes Show and Bus Tour.!
The tour is our opportunity to bring all the resources that are preventing people from becoming homeowners to one location. I like to call it our Hope Tour because what someone is seeing as barricades that stopping them, I show them that they are only barriers and we can get over them.
Our next tour is 9/25/21.
Our goal is to become a black national real estate brokerage to help bridge the homeownership gap in urban cores across the United States. We will be opening a 2nd office in Saint Louis Missouri in October 2021
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s never smooth, getting the asphalt pre out. Getting people to trust that you’re here to help them not hurt them. I think the biggest hurdle is getting people to change their mindset to believe they can buy a home.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
